During the Dark Knight days the producer told his idea was to have at the least 7 Batman films like Harry Potter. As Dark knight is only the year two of Batman's career. After this movie he comes back after 8 years and gets done with the being Batman soon. May be they should have made a third year film where batman returns and if Nolan/Bale are not interested after 3 films they should have let other directors to continue it like James Bond series.
Let's be honest. Batman Begins was the reboot the franchise needed, but didn't deserve. They caught lightning in a bottle with Nolan. You could try to argue Nolan could've stepped aside after making a third-year Batman film, but after TDK, WB understood that Nolan earned his trilogy and deserved to make it exactly as he wanted it.
Plus, they had just seen what happened over at Sony with the studio interfering with Raimi's Spidey 3. Raimi played ball, and his trilogy was left in shambles. Nolan's Batman and Raimi's Spidey were the blueprints for the MCU on what to do and what to avoid.
I strongly doubt that this franchise could have produced seven quality films. Nolan can't have wanted to devote half his career to this franchise, he's got other creative irons in the fire, so if there had been any plan for seven films then he would have turned it over to inferior directors and the films would undoubtedly have declined in quality.
But however weak they might have been, they couldn't have been worse that "B vs S" or "Justice League"!
I’m with you, Otter. No one is going to sustain a narrative like this over 7 installments. If that truly was the corporate (and not the director’s) plan, it was stupid. It would have collapsed under its own weight. Hell, Homer’s Illyad and Odyssey had but two installments!
And I agree that Nolan has better things to do with his time. I love 2 of his 3 Batman movies, but I would rather see him produce 4 different films outside of Batman, like Inception, for all its questionable but exciting choices, than 4 more Batman movies. Truly talented auteurs need to move beyond comic books, and horror; for example, Sam Raimi: Music Of The Heart.
There is no way they could have sustained this level of quality over the course of 7 movies. Neither Bale nor Nolan would have been onboard with it. Nolan is a good director and has his own plans, he doesn't need a franchise to survive. The same goes for Bale, a very talented and diverse actor. He probably wants to take part in as many different projects as possible.
Besides, they knew they couldn't keep up the quality for too long. Soon enough the energy and the passion for the projects fade away.
It definitely wasn't their egos. It's just that they wanted to have a closure to the series before it dropped in quality. Rises was dipping its toe in the low quality territory already. I think it was a pretty good movie, but there was definitely a drop in quality.
If this trilogy was in the hands of some subpar director and a mediocre actor, then maybe they would have made more movies. But as it is, neither Bale nor Nolan need the Batman franchise. I'm sure they enjoyed their time on it, but they have other plans.
Yes i agree they should have made a movie in between. Final movie was just retiring chapter. But people are more obsessed with the word Trilogy. Why cant it be a tetrology. usually the first film takes more time in explaining the orgins of the hero so the series usualy kicks of in 2nd movie. That is the reason mostly part 2 becomes good as they dont have to tell a origin or end. The moment when they reach the 3rd movie they are in compulsion to end it.
What no one seems to mention is Heath Ledger. I think Nolan had bigger plans for the Joker, he gets tied up and we assume he gets put into prison. I think we would have seen a very different 3rd movie or maybe even 4 movies had it not been for Heath's tragic death.
