Why don't more people consider adoption?

Attempting to leave both politics and religion out of this (fat chance, I know):

But in a situation where the mom's life isn't in danger, and the pregnancy wasn't the result of rape, why is abortion still the first choice for a woman with an unwanted pregnancy? How many infertile Bateman-Garner-esque couples are out there? And isn't the waiting list to adopt children from Southeast Asia really long?

reply

The abortion rate is actually way down and has declined the last 5 years. It used to be 1.5 million a year. Now it is less than half a million. In a country of 300 million, the rate is pretty low and really not worth all the debate. Teen age pregnancy is also way down. And if they do have them, they keep them.

It is not a first choice. Education is working and kids are using protection.

There are plenty of children available in the foster care system. Almost a million of them. We have a better system for getting dogs adopted then we do our children. Take in a foster child. You will be amazed.

reply

The abortion rate is down, but so is the birth rate. Unfortunately, the PGR is still rising. Unfortunately, our amount of stupid people is also rising in record numbers.
Which brings us to the original question "why not more adoptions"? Plain and simple, it's foolish not to have an early abortion. In other words, it's stupid. For so many reasons, it would take 2hrs to list.

Because pregnancy is inconvenient, stressful, and disruptive to living life normally, particularly when you don't want to be pregnant.

reply

Pregnancy is hell for 9 months and then you run the risk of falling in love with your child robbing the adoptive parents at the last minute. This happens a lot unfortunately. Also there are sooooo many kids already alive who desperately need to be adopted.

reply

They should not have sex if they don't want a baby.

reply

"Don't have sex if you don't want a baby"? This is an example of our "stupid people".
Do; people eat only to nurish the body?
people drive only for useful transportation?
people have oral just to avoid pregnancy?

reply

But the average person has sex about once a week. That suggests that recreational sex is very common.

reply

You're talking about why more people with unwanted pregnancies don't consider putting the kid of for adoption? Right?

The title is a bit confusing. Almost seems like you're asking why don't more people who want children adopt them, rather than having them biologically.

Anyway, for the answer:

1. Like another person said, pregnancy is stressful, painful, inconvenient, risky (even if doctors don't foresee the mother's life to be in danger) and can have permanent or long lasting changes to your body. Another downside the guy didn't mention is that even if you live among liberals, having an unwanted pregnancy is going to make you feel very judged. From experience, it's going to make you feel stupid, irresponsible and ashamed. Many people would rather have an abortion without anybody around them finding out. And with all the emotional and physical downside attached to an unwanted pregnancy, keeping it for nine months and putting it up for adoption isn't going to provide you with much upside at all. There isn't going to be much money (if any at all) if you didn't get paid to be a surrogate beforehand. The only possible upside would be your own spiritual beliefs or the knowledge that you have a biological offspring alive somewhere. And I think most strong people's spiritual beliefs would probably crumple under the pressure of an unwanted pregnancy.

2. "Adoption" isn't usually possible, from what I understand. Because of the number of kids waiting for adoption being much higher than the amount of people willing to adopt. A quick google search doesn't provide me with exact statistics, but I'm fairly sure this is the case. With foster care being more realistic than adoption, inflating the number of kids in foster care isn't necessarily a good thing for society as a whole.

Simply said, a woman has a choice between an inexpensive fast procedure, or a costly 9 month struggle of mental and physical anguish.

Also, choosing not to have an abortion for religious reasons, is like choosing not to go out in a full moon due to warewolves.

reply

War, disease, pollution, natural disaster, rape, murder, and people just being themselves(mean, selfish)why in any sense would anyone want to bring more suffering into this world? Better never to have been by david benatar! You need an IQ over 80 to understand the book!

reply

Not religious reasons, but what about morality...Juno couldn't do it after her class mate told her about "fingernails" this makes her think that she was not removing a "tissue" from her body like many people fool themselves into thinking, but she realized that she was killing a future person...hence she didn't do it for religious reasons but for not being able to do what she thought to be wrong.

Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?

There is nothing in the movie to suggest Juno changed her mind for moral reasons. Even the screenwriter has said as much.

reply

Juno: I couldn't do it. (to Leah)

Brenda: Have you considered...you know, the alternative?
Juno: No (although she indeed did)

The way Juno ran out of the abortion clinic...

Su-Chin: God appreciates your miracle.

I mean there are some hints scattered for anyone to see, she considered that it was not the right thing to do...People can elect to see the obvious or deny what makes you uncomfortable or what doesn't agrees with your ideology... The filmmakers clearly thought that shoving down the throats of their audience a pro-life message will not be productive and possibly "offend" half of their audience... If I wanted to make a movie about a message (call it pro-life or whatever political message I wanted to convey) I would do it carefully and discreetly and obviously will deny the movie had any political statement, agenda or intention to preach morality with which some part of the population seems to take offense nowadays.

Yes, people like you who invent facts which don't exist in reality. You are inventing a make-believe version of the movie because you want it to support your ideas and you fundamentally don't care about what the people who made the movie actually believe.

The filmmakers clearly thought that shoving down the throats of their audience a pro-life message will not be productive and possibly "offend" half of their audience.

You used the word "clearly" in this sentence. If the evidence for their intentions is so "clearly" present, please present it. Good luck with that!

If I wanted to make a movie about a message (call it pro-life or whatever political message I wanted to convey) I would do it carefully and discreetly and obviously will deny the movie had any political statement, agenda or intention to preach morality with which some part of the population seems to take offense nowadays.

The woman who wrote this movie is a former sex-worker who has explicitly stated that she is a pro-choice feminist and that Juno's decision is based on non-political, personal motivations. Get a clue. There is no conspiracy to secretly hide an anti-choice agenda. Just enjoy the movie for what it is and stop trying to pretend it is advancing your personal political beliefs.

reply

Like I said before, people deny what doesn't agree with your point of view. I found this movie gives a very good message. Is up to you to determine what is it... And why is it so bad, if some had the choice and then she decides that is wrong to kill a fetus because the idea of having a heart beat or fingernails already developed makes you feel like a murderer/ If that person had the choice but chose against abortion and voiced that he did it because he thought it was inmoral...Why that argument makes "pro-choice" advocates feel so uncomfortable? If you are so convinced the "pro choice" route is not, an inmoral or unethical choice why some one who thinks otherwise makes you feel... what is it ...guilty?

Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?

reply

And that is exactly what you are doing. You are so delusional about this issue that you ignore what the person who wrote the movie says about it. You have no interest in truth or reality.

And why is it so bad, if some had the choice and then she decides that is wrong to kill a fetus because the idea of having a heart beat or fingernails already developed makes you feel like a murderer/

There is no evidence within the movie that Juno thought this. You are just making crap up to fit your own personal political views.

reply

that is exactly what you are doing.

Actually I was talking about you, but it could be interpreted both ways.LOL

is no evidence within the movie that Juno thought this.

No evidence, just clues. And the point in my question was, even if the film would have made it clear, (for example if the Juno character have said that herself)...why the fact of a random person expressing that, makes pro-choice activists uncomfortable? It is after all not murder to you, why if it feels like murder to a pregnant teenager has to make you feel uncomfortable? Stick to your beliefs! And pay no attention to others, even if those others are trying to proselyte others.

Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?

There is zero evidence that Juno does feel as if it is murder.

The fact of the matter is that the author of the movie is a pro-choice feminist who wanted to make a movie about a smart-mouthed teen from a working class family handing a baby off to a rich, upper class couple. There is no movie if the baby is aborted. But she wanted to show that Juno had a choice in the matter. Choice is the key.

reply

I'm not talking about THIS movie anymore I said why pro-choice advocates get uncomfortable if a pregnant teenage girl feels that aborting her offspring is committing murder? Even with some discreet hints Juno in this movie could potentially indicate that by her change of heart (no evidence, yes you are right...very defensive, but right nonetheless) Although no evidence it seems that solely the HINT of Juno declining abortion for "potentially" considering it murder (the baby has fingernails quote) makes you so uncomfortable...is quite puzzling.

Foolish, stupid beliefs of any kind always make a rational person uncomfortable when they are held by other persons.

reply

"why pro-choice advocates get uncomfortable if a pregnant teenage girl feels that aborting her offspring is committing murder?"

nobody feels like that. it's the right devision in every case.

reply

why would they? abortion makes way more sense. it should be the preferred option.

reply

That is very rational

reply

100%

reply

What if your parents thought that way.

reply

then i would have never known, would i? apart from that they would have had much more spare money. who knows, maybe my dad would not have worked himself to death. maybe didn't even die of a heart attack at a young age.

reply

Hmm that is fair

reply

agreed.

reply

What did your dad do for a living?

reply

carpenter. opened up his own small business after a couple of years of working like a horse.

reply

That is very physically back breaking work

reply

yes, indeed.

Abortion is a terrible option but sometimes the least terrible option. People, even people who have no desire for a child, are going to have sex so banking on abstinence is folly. The answer to this whole conundrum is USE BIRTH CONTROL! If people would slow down and take a minute to think and take simple precautions then 99% of the non-rape, non life threatening scenarios would be eliminated. I’ve helped raise three responsible, productive, tax-paying children to adulthood, it is a massive commitment and should only be undertaken by people that are 100% committed to it from the getgo.
