Is it just me or is Julia Stiles a really bad actor? I've seen her in the Bourne movies, teenage flicks. She's horrible! Shes awkward and unnatural. This movie was the worst. She makes a horrid love interest. Leiv Shrieber is a quality actor and she is in no way fit to play his wife. She totally unconvincing.
She's not a bad actress usually, but she was terribly miscast here. Her role was played stiffer than a board. But no one acted as badly as Liev Shrieber! He was one of the worst casting choices I have ever seen for any film...ever! He read every single line in the same gravelly, marble-mouthed mumble & never changed facial expressions! He all but ruined this movie.
The only good casting choices were for Damien & Mrs. Baylock.
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus." "Didn't he discover America?" "Penfold, shush."
I could be wrong but I have a theory as why he was kind of stiff. First of all thats kind of how the role was supposed to be and Peck was kind of stiff in his version too. Also he looked exactly like an adult version of Damian at least to me. I wonder if they had made the sequals if he would have been called back to play Damian as an adult. Anyway his mannerisms in this movie kind of matched the bland face of young damian and his robotic mannerisms.
I think in this case she did the best she could with what they gave her. A lot of the dialog was so weirdly retro (don't even get me started on the wardrobe) that there really just wasn't a natural way to deliver it. I actually like her a lot but she was totally miscast in this. I give her credit for taking it on, though! She's pretty fearless & that's enough for me to think she generally rules.
I actually didn't like the people they chose for Robert or Kate. To me it seemed like they were chosen because they were young and good looking rather than how well they fit the roles. They didn't seem like a real family and didn't have much chemistry to me. The person who played Damien was perfect in the role, though.
She was too young to play the part of a sophisticated diplomatic wife, which is a job in itself. She would have been more appropriate for the Holly Palance part.
Actually she can act and has given alot of good performances. Ex. 10 Things I Hate About You, Wicked, The Bourne movies, O, The Business of Strangers, Silver Linings Playbook, Mona Lisa Smile, Save the Last Dance, etc. She's a good actress who picks the wrong roles once and a while.
Really not a good actor, I agree. Same persona in every movie she is in, really doesn't stand any better than any other supporting actor, and truly not a lead actress at all. Take care..... Peace To All
I must really disagree with you here. She's one of the best actors I know and underrated. She can play pretty much anything. This role didn't fit her, though. She isn't a spoiled brat.
