outrageously insipid reason for Clayton being outside of his car when it exploded. He went to look at the horses because it reminded him of a picture in his son's role playing book????????????????????

It was insulting and poor movie making. My attention span was fine. The use of the book was so subtle that even if I caught it while watching it, (I actually learned it from reading posts here) I still find it an incredibly stupid plot device, and we deserved better from a veteran film maker.
It's called symbolism. Any dumb plot device could have sufficed for him to survive that. The director wanted something with some actual meaning to represent it.
And it's really the only stretch in the entire narrative, stop raging.
So then, if Clayton had gotten out to take a leak in the woods instead of to look at the horses, it would've been a fantastic movie then? That's the difference between an excellent film and one that is "Zzzzz"-worthy, "crap", "garbage", "overrated", "ridiculous", etc.?
shareI would have been able to buy him taking a leak much more than looking at horses because it reminded him of his son's stupid book. But even so. I found the movie boring. The stupid horses thing just pushed it way over the cliff.
shareI liked that part actually. Through the movie he was slogging through life, failing at most things, his marriage, partnership, financially, his family, etc. I think the character saw a connection in that scene. That these random situations in his life may have some deeper connection. And that ultimately saved his life. I think it gives him hope for his future. Whatever that is.
