Why the vietnamese tortured the prisoners?

I see nobody has mention this in the boards but it was something make me feel sick how the prisoner were treated.They were abused , starved and tortured .
It looks like that everyone thinks thats normal in Vietnam or Laos. How bad is that?

They were Communist enemies of the United States. What more explanation does there have to be?

Because no one outside of the Western world gives a crap about following the Geneva convention.
