Anyone think they brought back Mary because ...

... Jeffrey Dean Morgan was busy, and therefore unable to reprise his role as John Winchester?

Because when they brought back Mary Winchester, they tried to portray this intense emotional reunion between her and the boys. The truth is that she had died when they were young. They don’t remember her. They didn’t have a close relationship with her. They were close to the father, John. But not Mary.

From the audience POV, we hardly saw Mary too. We also didn’t know her. So her return didn’t have any emotional effect on us either. In contrast, the audience did know John, and last we saw of him, he sacrificed himself to save Dean. A return of John Winchester would have produced emotion.

I just get the feeling that Mary’s return was supposed to be John’s return. But because of casting issues, they had to go with Mary.

Honestly - I didn’t like the return of Mary Winchester. If they couldn’t bring back John, they might have been better off bringing back Bobby instead of Mary.

I am not a big Bobby fan, I would have preferred Mary as we never saw hardly any of her dynamics early on. I think we missed out on that. I think also we didn't know how Mary was around her sons because we never saw her in action. This is why we assume that the boys didn't know their mother. Yes, they were young when she died in such a cruel, unimaginable way. But, that said, I am glad we got to see more of her personality later on when Amara bought her back. I like how Mary had became part of team Winchester, and that she had been allowed to spend time with her sons naturally. It's a real shame Jeff wasn't allowed to come back but we did get a family reunion of sorts. Just wished it had been for longer, or we got to see them all back together in heaven which would have been just awesome.

I think they brought Mary in for the some of the things you said. I don't think they were thinking to bring JDM back full time or even recurring, but I do believe that they wanted him to return at time some point.

The "most" disappointing thing about bringing Mary back is, she ran away basically. It's annoying when shows have this character on, but then not really on. I cant think of the actresses full name, but she wasn't a main character, so they used her when they "could" vs. using her to a full extent. If that makes any sense. And I think her absence made her character dis likable and she was portrayed too rough.
