What I didn't get?

How did Dean know when and where to meet Sam on that bridge? I know time is different up there just like it was in hell. The boys are not telepathic and don't have special powers to connect with one another. so how was this trickery done?

We don't know how old Sam was when he died, so therefore, we don't know what time had elapsed on earth to what it did in heaven at Dean's end. Sam looked old, but you just can't pin point an age, to be able to decipher the time lapse. This show is known for moving time on and not starting or finishing where we think it might.

So does anyone have a clue how Dean knew when to meet Sam, what date, what time in the future and we are talking decades not days, hours.... Because I sure as hell don't.

Had to say it. :)

Here's my thoughts. As for Dean knowing when Sam would appear I don't think so. He knew eventually they would see other but as to Dean knowing when and where I don't think so. Bobby had said that Sam would be there but since time was different there wasn't any way of knowing. After Dean got out of the car and was looking at the view from the bridge he heard something behind him. Then gave that smile. I think it was Sam who found Dean and not the other way around. I would have loved to had seen Miracle there also.

Also it was a great place for the whole Supernatural team to wave goodbye.

A couple of notes to add. When Sam was playing ball with his son the woman in the background looked like Eileen. Not sure why they didn't show a closer look but it was clear he didn't go back to the bunker. Was glad as I wanted them together. Bobby said that Jack with the help of Cas rearranged heaven. Did that mean that Cas got out of the Empty and is now back to work in Heaven?

Good point about Sam found Dean rather than the other way around, hadn't thought of that one. Thinking that if they are in heaven, have they gained some tiny amount of super powers. ;)

I agree about the place on the bridge to wave goodbye. I feel sure I've seen that location before way back, maybe messing with my thought processes.

Yes, Jack got Cas out of the Empty, and with the help of Cas rearranged heaven. Many fans on-line are proud of Jack for the work he put in to making it a better place. Bobby seemed really happy with those small changes. It was also great to learn that Cas never ended his days in that dark and empty place. I also wonder what happened to Meg, did she get blown to pieces by Jack's bomb?

Many including me think it was Eileen, and think it was due to Covid restrictions that they couldn't show her. I think they are only allowed 2 actors close to each other at one time, not 100% on that but would take a guess that's why she wasn't at Sam's bed side when he died. That was very strange.

I don't think Dean knew he was going to meet Sam. I think he was just driving and stopped at the bridge. I had a feeling that's where Dean and Sam would reunite in heaven, but I wasn't sure how. Was Dean going to look over his shoulder and Sam would be standing there? Or was Sam going to reach out to Dean on the shoulder? Both wrong.

I think Dean felt Sam's presence as he smiled and said hey Sammy.

reply

A better question is why did Sam show up at the age he did, if you can show up in heaven at any age why wouldn't it be at your best age which would have certainly been younger a bit younger when a person would be in their prime... and of course that would have also applied to Bobby... But since Bobby and Dean were stuck in body they were in when they did age wise then Sam should have popped up in heaven much older.

The bottom line is the show has never really followed any set logic so don't go looking for one in the ending.

reply

I strongly feel that Jack had something to do with that. He wanted to revert Sam back to the age he was when Dean died, so the time jump wouldn't look too obvious. Which I thought was rather cool of Jack to think of Sam in that way. He did good...

reply

Well except that Jack wasn't around anymore, according to Bobby after Jack retooled Heaven he left.

reply

I didn't hear that bit, that he'd left heaven. Why would he leave when he's just got the place off the ground. Doesn't make any sense?

reply

I don't think he did leave. He told the guys that he would be everywhere but no one would be able to see him. The part I liked was when he said he wouldn't be hands on and wouldn't write himself into the story the way Chuck did. So He''s here we just have to believe.

I love it when he started to walk away and faded away. Noticed that he was wearing a white jacket and not the tan one he was wearing at the beginning of the episode. I'm going to rewatch and see if it changed when he was taking the power from Chuck or before that.

That's what I remember, but will watch again.

Rewatch and listen when dean talks with bobby.

It was the best age for him to be when he finally joined his brother again. Sam joined Dean as Dean last saw Sam. It was perfect. The long ride Dean was taking while Sam lived, aged and died on earth made me realize the great reunion was about to happen. At one point I thought Sam would suddenly show up in Baby next to Dean, but I was happy with the bridge meeting. That smile on Dean’s face and his “Hey Sammy” made my heart beat faster. It was as if nothing had changed through the years Sam lived on earth.

Again, the ending was beautiful. It wiped away the tears from the excruciating death scene. Excellent acting by both. I just watched it last night (Jan. 7, 2021) and it had a profound effect on me due to my husband dying in June of 2020. We believers are told we will have new bodies and know the ones who departed before us.

Sorry for your loss.

I really like what you stated, "We believers are told we will have new bodies and know the ones who departed before us." It's comforting.

reply

Thank you for your caring. I can’t believe it will be 2 years in June, 2022. My time on this earth is fast coming to an end. It won’t be too long before I see him again. I would hope when I do I’ll be 19 again and he’ll be that hunk of a guy I met when he was 23! It all began at Winn-Dixie and the rest is history.

I am guessing that bridge is a portal or well.. a bridge between the living and the dead. I would also guess that this "bridge" looks different for different people. For Sam and Dean I am guessing it resembles some place on Earth that was special to them.

In other words the "bridge" is what you want it to be.

reply

Cool thought, I like that idea.

I remember right before Dean goes for a drive, Bobby Singer tells him something like, "Time passes differently here." I think Dean goes a drive for like a few hours, and a few hours in heaven = Sam's entire lifespan. So Dean didn't really "wait" a long time for Sam to appear. Sam lived for decades, but in Dean's POV, it was just a few hours.

As for how they knew to meet on the bridge, I think that was just some heavenly power. Heaven sensed that Sam's wish was to meet his brother in the afterlife, and they made it happen

Redban, thank you another cool response. I think that's laid that thought to rest. It was nagging me for ages!
