She claims being a genius and has no clue about her own culture's behavior, yet when it comes to another culture she is all respectful and behaves properly!!!
Is it pure arrogance as socially inept doesn't explain that discrepancy.

Okay, a she's studied them and b she's a human with a personality, she is respectful enough and I personally really like that they explore her almost Aspergers type personality more in depth. although she doesn't have aspurgers she's, just that way inclined on the spectrum, it's easier to pretend when amending things like facts to what you've studied. but you can act every day, or you will go crazy. and she is knowledge able about her own culture, as demonstrated more throughout the series.

shareI was watching old episodes from the first season, and she wasn't as clueless. She didn't get some current references, but the character certainly went through some transformations. I don't think she was intended to be so inept. I haven't read any of the books so I don't know what she's like in them, but it's like they kept making her worse and worse as the seasons went on.

shareIt's plausible though as she is a liberal along with her sniper boyfriend and the rest of the crew. She doesn't have any respect for her own culture and there isn't any reason for her to care about it or understand it. Other people's cultures though? Well she can get a lot of attention and kudos from respecting those even if in most cases they are backward and intolerant of the very things she holds dear.
