This morning i was watching "The View", and there were about 2 dozen people siting in the 2 front rows in the studio. All of them proudly wearing the same shirt, that said "El Cantante." Funny part is, that Marc Anthony came out for an interview and pretended to be surprised, AS IF we all didn't know that J.Lo and Marc himself told these idiots if you wear this t-shirt, you get a little air time. These people were screaming and cheering. Good Actors!! Maybe Marc promised them a SAG Card!
And no, I have not watched the film, to tell you the truth all these bad reviews make me glad I didn't! But i guess I'm not alone, judging by the poor theater count.
J-Lo really had this year planned out. Think about it, she does a biographical picture (biopic), and thinks she can give Reese Witherspoon a run for her money AND she does a all Spanish album. Hoping that she can dance her way into getting a LATIN Grammy (Because she knows she'll never get a REAL Grammy...) She MIGHT get a Latin Grammy, because some Latino critics might be excited that a Hollywood (falling) star is in their company and entertaining the Latino community *shrugs*
As for Oscar? Judging from reviews and trailers, she's gonna have to keep dreaming for that Oscar. No amount witch-craft and azz shaking is going to make her get a nomination.
As for divorce? Not until Marc gets to mingle with all the Hollywood heavyweights; like Beckhams, Cruise, Smiths ect ect. And not until J-Low finishes her tour with Marc. We'll see what her plans are for next year!!
Ummm, not really. The Grammy Awards (not the "anglo grammies" there Sparky) originated in 1971 while the Latin counterpart not until 2000. The only comparison are that the winners are distinguished by peer vote.
The Grammy Awards distribute 28 major categories that as an average each encompass 6 awards. One category that focuses on Latin entertainers has a total of 9 awards within. Of course, these performers are still eligible to win the major awards which surround all categories (a.e. Album of the Year, Song of the Year, etc.)
The Latin counterpart offers nothing of the sort. It's useless. I tried to watch it one year and the performances were below par, the production was poor and it wasn't a fair representation of the overall music scene. It's a good show for people who enjoy Latin music, but it cannot be compared the actual Grammy Awards show which follows music of all ranges and determines the Best of the Best.
I am latin and I agree that the Latin Grammies are a joke and are used as a mere mean of promotion and public relations. You can't have a legit award ceremony that is biased and contains genres such as "Regional Mexican Music" but you never see "Regional El Salvadorean Music" or "Peruvian Music". A Latin Grammy is not a real Grammy, the name of the Grammy is being stained by putting the word Latin next to it and making it seem legit.
Agreed, whenever the powers-that-be make attempts to include everyone, they always end up causing more dissent and aggression in the people. If the Grammies were exclusive and only concentrated on one sort of music, I would definitely support the need for a secondary and even third award ceremony, but that's not the case. Perhaps, once it was, but now the Grammy Awards are as all inclusive as anything Americanized can be.
A. The word 'racism' in the title of your post B. Your admission that you haven't seen the film for yourself C. Personal attacks on J. Lo and Marc...unnecessary
Other than that, the film has its serious flaws but taking it to the level of a personal attack on Jennifer Lopez disqualifies you from the ranks of an objective, intelligent reviewer.
"All men are brothers. Every man is an heir to a legacy of dignity and worth." MLK
Whenever I hear the personal attacks, I tune that poster right out.
I actually like J. Lo and what she represents very much but I can be honest enough with myself to say that her dominance of the narrative of this film kind of ruined it. It wasn't the Puchi and Hector Story, it was supposed to the be the life story of Hector Lavoe, El Cantante, the man and the legend.
Like I said, I respect Jennifer to death and hope that my daughter will have half her talent and drive but I think the memory of Hector Lavoe was not served very well in El Cantante.

There's over 40 million of us latinos in this country and every day there will be more and more of us! And I hope that fact causes you to lose sleep every night!

and how many of those 40 million that you mentioned actually went to see the flick?

First of all, just so you know, the film was not a huge Hollywood film and therefore did not come out in many theatres. It also did not have a lot of publicity. But aside from that it actually DID well. I am Central American, not Puerto Rican and am also 21 years old, and I know who Hector Lavoe was. I grew up listening to Salsa and then as I got older I got to learn a lot about his history. Obviously you are racist because you have no idea what it means to have a voice for the Latino community. Hector Lavoe was a great singer and he was able to bring, not only the Puerto Rican community but all of the Latino community, recognition.
And I see that your opinions are based on very low standards. NOT everyone likes the same things, and not everyone knows about Hector Lavoe, so of course some reviewers wouldn't understand. How about you GO see it and form your OWN opinion. I went to go see it on opening night and you know what? Just knowing the power and emotion Hector Lavoe had in his singing and the way Marc Anthony portrayed it made me LOVE the movie and I would go and probably will see it again.
As for J.Lo, I did not know you knew her personally? Because judging by how you know her "career goals" and "life plans" it seems like you do. Personally I am not a big fan of Jennifer Lopez, but I am glad that she made this project. If not only to let people know who Hector Lavoe was, but also to remind us Latinos, just how unique, special, and WONDERFUL our culture is. Of course you wouldn't understand because obviously your too stuck on your white supremecist state of mind that you can not see that.
And just so you know, the theater I went to, was FULL and there were plenty of white people, who are definitely a lot more informed than you!
QUE VIVA LA GENTA LATINA!!! LONG LIVE THE LATINO COMMUNITY!!!
I couldn't agree more. I went to see this movie in New Jersey in an audience full of latinos, who by the way were singing through the movie and clapped at the end.
My mom grew up with the fania all stars in NYC during the 70's. What upsets me about "ethnic" films are people won't give them a chance, they pre-judge and never change their opinions. There is more out there in this world then people care to open their eyes to.
I read so many reviews, not just on IMDB about how a story like this has been told about so many muscians...but it hasn't. There has not been a story like this. Hector was not only about a latin artist, but a latin artist who helped generate the entire salsa movement.
It was a great movie, the pace and editing was superb. It fit the story of Hector Lavoe perfectly, his life was fast pace, confusing, and jolting all at the same time and the making of this film reflected it.
interesting. I could care less what the Oscars, or IMDB, or Critics (who lets face it, are paid to say good things about some bad movies) have to say. You can not accurately judge a movie until you have seen it yourself. Now lets see...in your words and by your stipulations/criteria, would I call them "insane?" If they comment on a movie that they have not yet seen themselves, then I would have to call them "insane."
Its like saying you hate oranges and telling everyone it tastes like sh*t even if you have never in your life seen an orange or eaten one.
Funny because the movie got bad reviews from the CRITICS, who pretty much have slammed very good movies. As you can see by the yahoo moview reviews,it got very good reviews. Now i'm talking about the movie viewers, not the critics. Also for a movie that only showed up in 542 theatres and gross $3.25 million, that is very good. All the other top 11 movies were in 1500-3600 movie theatres, so if you do the math.....sorry....to the ones that can do the math, that is about $6,000 per theatre....wonder how many movies did that. Out of 20-100 movies it came in 12th..not bad. I myself did not want to see it but went with my wife and appreciated the movie for it's music. Nowadays you enter any restaurant that plays music and yoou don't hear rock, pop, r&b or country...you hear salsa.
Some people are just haters and that's usually because of bad upbringing. Sorry dude, it'll get better for you.
I noticed that taco dude only says bad things about this movie...Could it be you've been rejected by latin women ? C'mon taco......tell us the truth...or did someone latino take your girlfriend away....c'mon taco...pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee tell us. I love this guy, love all the pathetic humans around me.
