Point of view from a Latino: NOBODY CARES!!!

This film is just another example of the non-Mexican, Miami/New York based Latin film making industry. A film about Hector Lavoe??? WHO IN THE HELL CARES?!?! Why in the hell would anyone outside of the Caribbean nations (excluding Mexico) be interested in this crap? I ask this question because in the weeks leading up to its release, this movie has been crammed down everyone's throat. Nobody cares because nobody outside of the Caribbean nations cares about Salsa (which by the way originated in Cuba) or view it as a serious or legit music genre. Salsa is a novelty, heck, it (along w/the other tropical latin music genres) only comprises about 10% of the LATIN music industry. People may like to dance Salsa every now and then, but they don't know who these singers are and THEY DON'T CARE! These singers do not garner much popularity for themselves outside of the Caribbean Latin community because they are really not that talented outside of being marginal singers at best. They are certainly not composers, most of their songs are rip offs or remakes of Spanish or Mexican composed pop or romantic songs. The fools who made this movie no doubt felt they could make an easy buck with this movie because past movies about famous late latin celebs such as Ritchie Valens, Selena & Frida Kahlo were huge successes. Well there's a big difference here, THESE PEOPLE ACTUALLY HAD TALENT and were internationally known. So please, before another one of these pointless movies are made (Celia Cruz), remember, NOBODY CARES!!!

RVejar because of people like you is that Latinos are in the hole they are in. I assume you are Mexican american? Not all Latinos in the US are mexicans. And for your information Salsa music originated in New York and it could have only happened here. Cubans, Puertoricans, Dominicans, Peruvians, Colombians and even Mexicans contributed. And one more piece of information music like Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia and Rap music unlike other forms of music is dance all over the world. What does that tell you? Can Chinese music say that? Can Italian music say that? Can Romanian music say that?

RVejar I suggest to you to read. Read alot. Because you know very little. And to all Latinos I say stay positive!

Well....it may be that some may not care who Hector lavoe is but others do. Let's be frank here..if you are referring to the people who DON'T CARE, you must be referring to the Anglo saxon people..and as far as they are concerned those who are NOT interested in Hector would not be interested in SElena or any other latin artist mexican or CArribean.

I am of PUerto Rican ancestry and I happen to LOve Mexican music, Mariachi bands, musica ranchera..I love it, I sing it..but I wouldn't say it is of more importance than someone else's music..AND IF someone told me that it isn't good or important enough to make a movie of it, or that people are interested in it, I would tell them that they are wrong. for every group who isn't interested there is one that is.

Mexican music is beautiful but so is carribean music..as far as talent goes, there are many out there that compose and are excellent artists....your Mexican culture isn't only comprised of stellar artists..you have your 'marginal' artists as well...Paulino Rubio, to name one..she's not exactly someone I would refer to as 'talented'...but yet, she has appeal to some group out there so...hey you go girl....
and as far as Selena, I didn't know about selena until close to her death...she was a good singer but like any other up and coming singer...nothing sensational..what made her more famous was her untimely death. so let's be real. Her musical career wasn't that interesting, i saw the movie and without the unfortunate event of her death, she didn't seem anything special to me.

The movie, the movie could have been better, I agree...I think that more of the artists that PERFORMED with Hector in his time should have been consulted and included in the movie...Cheo Feliciano, Larry Harlow, and others...they should have focused the story more on the gigs themselves, his relationship with the other artists, his relationship with the people (audience) (who loved him) and not so much of his personal life, or should I say, Puchi's...?

during the 40's and 50's when the big bands 'orchestras'(tito puente, tito rodriguez, were playing at the famous Palladium, it wasnt just latins who patroned to listen and dance to the latin music..there were anglos too...
so there is a group (anglo and others) out there that had some interest and knowledge of who Hector Lavoe was.
YOU CANNOT SPEAK FOR EVERYONE ON THIS...ONLY FOR YOURSELF.

OP - please stop making a jackas$ out of all Mexicans.

My familia is mexican and I am embarrassed by the comments from the original poster. Please don't say "no one cares". Guess what? I CARE! I loved the movie, I'ts nice to understand where music comes from and how artist rise and fall. If you don't care, then why are you in "the cantante" board? It's simple PENDEJO, just don't watch the movie! Or go watch SELENA again if that floats your boat, NO ONE CARES!! I guess you're one of those idiots who thinks he's a know-it-all and refuses to be educated about other cultures he knows nothing about. Good luck being an igorant dumbas$ the rest of your life..

My Latino and Latino friends:
There will always be people who will live to criticize and put down talent.
Hector Lavoe was the king of salsa while he was alive. He was called el cantante de los cantantes because he was the favorite singer of ALL the salsa singers, his talent was amazing. Like most people he also had his faults. Now for me whenever you see someone who says “I DON’T CARE” but its making an argument, that is conflicting information because I don’t talk or make good or bad comments about something
“if ” I didn’t care. Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon and Fania members were the ones who open the door for today’s Hispanics artist. People like rvejar has nothing to live for but the most pathetic thing about this is!!!!!! Hector Lavoe is a legend rvejar IS NOT!
Hector Lavoe is dead and still makes more money than rvejar can imagine!
Now! rvejar most be living under a rock in the desert. Salsa is world wide.
And if rvejar don’t believe it. Come out of your hole and get on the web and start by searching the world salsa congress! will be a huge awakening to see how many countries including Russia! Love the salsa music and the Latino artist!
So my advice to all my latinos and latino friends. Don’t let a cave person heat your mind and insult you with comments that comes from a NOBODY!

Well, it's interesting and sad, at the time, some the stats here expressed. For the ones that consider that latino cultures in other countries, especially in U.S., are irrelevant or unimportant to others outside these same communities, if so, why latin cultures o countries inside or outside U.S. should care about the lives and careers of other singers, actors or celebs such as Ray Charles (Ray), Bilie Holliday (Lady sings the blues), Patsy Cline (Sweet dreams), Loretta Lynn (Coalminer's daughter), Johnny Cash (Walk the line) among many others? These artists are not directly related to any latin culture, so why should we be interested in them? In my opinion there's no point in bashing and minimizing some other artists' careers just because you don't like it or you don't understand it (no one says you have to). Now, pointless movies? Come on! There are lots of them! And they aren't latin movies precisely, just check this site and you'll see.

I think a lot of the "gente" on this board are full of *beep* I am some one of Puerto Rican and Mexican American Hertiage. I grew up on Salsa Music and Tejano Music aka Tex Mex and we should all (as Latinos) should be proud that the film indrusty our making movies about our "gente" such as Hector Lavoe, Ritchie Valens and Selena..Be proud that we as Latins are finally getting acknowledged. Peace!

Viva Robert Rodriguez!

my friend you gotta get your facts straight...i was born in Germany and Europe loves Salsa, and marginal singers? You don't know about the popular vocalists and incredible artists such as Ruben Blades!!!!! I would like for you to see some of the things that Mr. Blades has wrote and you tell me he doesn't have talent. And salsa lends itself to some of the best musical expressions. Conga player Giovanni Hidalgo is hailed as the worlds best percussionist and Arturo Sandoval is the best trumpet player alive! Get your facts straight please!

Wow, you're one incredibly stupid soul.

Please die now, asap, quick, fast, and in a hurry.

Comments like yours remind me how thankful I am to be
knowledgable about other societies, and therefore not
have to make ignorant assumptions about other people.

Except for you, of course.
