Nacho Libre vs Napoleon Dynamite

How could someone who made the classic Napoleon Dynamite make such a dismal, totally awful movie like Nacho Libre? What went wrong?

They are both hilarious movies. I think Nacho Libre has an edge though because the plot is stronger. I also find Ignacio to be a more likable lead than Napoleon.
