I doubt that there are even directors comparable to Del Toro or Cuarón at this time. Many directors depend too much on explosions or CGI. This movie was fine as it is, not to mention that I doubt that there will be any actors that had captured the small faction of the Blue Division to the tee nor any young actress that looks innocent enough such as Ivana Baquero or despicable like Sergi López did as CPT Vidal. Besides, Del Toro is an "American" as we all are, but as far as a US citizen, he's not.

Blue Division was the unit of Spanish "volunteers" who fought in the Eastern front along the German Army. The soldiers in this movie were "just" regular soldiers of the Spanish Army. If you want to see the "Blue Division" I recommend you watch the movie "Ispansi."

I'm American and cannot even believe you could think of such a thing. This film was perfect in every possible way. Maybe you should have turned on the subtitles so you knew what they were saying.
