Is this a joke?

For all the years I've used this site, I've always thought IMDB ratings were a pretty good pinpointer of deeming whether a movie was worth a watch. Anything above 7 has always been pretty good.

But with this movie.. I'm wondering if the movie was a cold parody of the ignorant's man world view of violence.

Or if the majority here are really making some sort of big practical joke, pretending to praise this movie.

I know it's silly of me to come here and say these things. I'm well aware that I probably get nothing constructive out of saying this, but it's been a long time since I've been so surprised, so I felt like sharing it.

If you read this far, and you seriously like this movie.. then tell me, what did you enjoy about this movie? I know I'm probably in for a troll roll, but I'd gladly give it a try.

Such type of movies are directed towards a certain segment,if you're not among them I can understand why you wouldn't enjoy it.
Word of advice, don't go watch a movie purely based on the imdb rating. First see the rating , read the description ,watch the trailer. If you watch the trailer for this movie (I'm assuming you didn't), one can clearly see what type of movie it is going to be and to whom it will appeal to. Heck, for this movie you can even deduce that just by looking at the poster.People like me will love this movie and hence the high rating.

reply

Thanks for the advice, but watching the trailer wasn't enough. I know action flicks, and I thought this was just another. But it wasn't, at least not to me. It seems like you disagree, so instead of discussing how to choose movies, can you tell me what you enjoyed about this movie?

I genuinely thought this was a really bad movie, except maybe some of the beginning. I liked Training Day, Taken, Leon, Pulp Fiction, Crank and a ton of other action flicks. Also Kill Bill for the more splatter kind. An exception, besides this one, has been the latest Captain America (but that was just because I dislike patriotism). Even the newest Transformers was better to me. And I didn't even like that very much.

This was so cold and serious, yet with such unrealistic characters. It only tried to be slightly funny/relatable with the early relationship between Robert and Alina. But it wasn't clever at any point. And the moral statements were as cold and depressing as they could be. I guess I just don't understand how to enjoy that kind of thing. But if this is a new trend, then I would like to understand it.

Agreed... very generic action film, absolutely nothing special about it.

I enjoyed it. It's just what a single 40 something male enjoys after coming home from a long hard days slog at work. It has everything which is not to harsh on the heed.
There... a simple answer. :)

reply

Thanks. It's been enjoyed by people of all ages though, which surprised me.

Maybe it's this. I am a divorced 41 male, and if I like movies like "Shawshank Redemption", I also like movies like this. I like the fact it is not believable, and in fact many of you would pale on the violence committed all over the world.
I like this type of heroes, that give all the beating, instead of the old JVC that would take a epic beating to then overcome himself and win.
I gave 10 to this movie, not based on it's quality, but how it made me feel. I do not see an action movie expecting to see an Oscar performance script or actors, I see it to have a good time enjoying it without having to think to much, I already do that on my day to day job.

Exactly my point. :) Nice one ;)

reply

Only if the 40 something male is simple minded.

this is an action movie, what do you expect? do u seriously cry about movies with aliens because they don't exist?
you putting problems in a non problematic movie. its a simple action movie with a knight in shining armor syndrome. Has for the violence, how did u expect him to deal with it? answer this from a movie point of view, not reality please.

Who´s the guy that never had a secret dream of being like this? of doing the things he does? this kind of revenge spree? a knight on shining armor!
The movie just suffer a bit from its duration and also... very few scenes with Moretz.

I'm not sure you expect an answer, but I don't identify with your exaggerated criticism. Obviously I don't demand realism - especially not in fantasy. But this movie seemed so serious to me. As if it was telling you this is how the world works, and this is a way that would be good to handle things, if only you had the skills. Maybe I interpreted it wrong. Maybe it's just as unserious as most action flicks out there, but it just didn't seem like it to me. No humor or emotional reasons to be vengeful like most of these types of movies have. No backstory to understand what got him into viewing the world this way.

But in regards to realism, my critique is not only of the main character. It's also of many of the "important" villains. Perhaps I'm biased because I wish more people knew about criminology.

If you're an invincible super killer, and you live in a world where some people are evil and selfish violent robots with no personality, then I think he probably did fine. Also in a world where these robots are as predictable as comets, always going exactly where he plans them to go, exactly when he wants it, as if he had hidden supernatural powers.

And yeah, I thought Moretz was too much away as well. Just as we were getting a bit into her character she's gone for most of the movie.

Now I'm worried there's many guys out there that has the same secret dream as you. Since I've studied extremely violent people, I don't share that dream though.

But I realized I don't get much out of asking, since most people are very defensive about the things they enjoy, as if I'm claiming they're inferior for liking something I don't.

Couldn't agree more, the movie was really, really awful.

The OP obviously doesn't know how the imdb ratings work.
If you forced every person on the planet to rate this it would probably get a 4.5 but in reality the rom com fans would never watch this type of movie so they won't drag the rating down. People who like Denzel Washington and action flicks will watch it and probably like it and voila my friend there is your rating. Not rocket science

reply

I think the explanation is simple. This is Denzel Washington casting in this movie as a super hero, pretty much, and the black community probably all voted 10 on this film

reply

Well, I'm about to watch and from what I've read in the reply's so far (almost all negative experiences, like your own) no one here remembers the original TV series!

It was a bloke (white, not that it really matters but somewhat older than DW - played by a British actor called Edward Woodward, though still set in the states) who was a retired special forces guy who just wanted a quiet life but couldn't resist hard luck cases. It was really rather good and I have high hopes this movie has done it justice so will be back when it's finished to let you know how it compares to the original...

reply

Ok, so watched it and I thought was really good and will rate it a 7 so IMDB did the trick as far as I'm concerned - I guess we look for different things in movies...
