What was the gas-station manager's agenda?

Why did he lead the family into their deaths by giving them the "shortcut" through the Hills?

He saw the girl getting her dog in his room, then he looks at his bag of jewels, then (just as the family is leaving) he tells them take a left at the next fork.

Why did he do it?

He basically provided the mutants with fresh victims. He worked with the mutants. I'm not exactly sure if he was one of them or not.

I don't know what else to call them besides 'mutants'. lol

He provided the cannibals with fresh meat (people) by recommending that "short cut". I think he was pretty much trapped in a sick deal with the cannibals. If he didn't provide them with new people, than they'd probably kill him. But then again, if that was the case, the old man should've just left the gas station. He could've escaped. And as in for the bag of jewels, I guess that was a gift from the cannibals for his cooperation.
