Yeah it's a thing where Hollywood think that Men have to be bulked up muscly to seem the part, when in fact people like Bruce Lee who was 173 cm (5 ft 8 in) and 64 kg (141 lb) and Jet Li who is 168 cm (5 ft 6 in) and 66kg (145 lb) and toned would likely kick all their arses. Can even add in Jackie Chan and David Carradine (as Caine in Kung Fu), to the list of what really is powerful but looks like it wouldn't be. [strike]Christian Bale as Batman is also one that is an exception to the recent rule, yes toned but not bulky however his suit does a lot to protect him.[/strike]

With the Women, Lucy Lawless as Xena was fairly normal and look at Buffy, Skye/Daisy or Agent Carter, same thing, personally I think Kono in H50 and Melinda May in AOS fall into the Jet Li and Bruce Lee category (don't let their slight frames fool you).

Somewhere along the line Hollywood decided that the bulked up Pro Wrestler for men look is what sells, while ironically Pro Wrestling is now going the opposite direction for men (as in bulked up is now the odd one out). The Women wrestlers are a mixed bag now, Alexa Bliss is a Champion and she's 155 cm (5 ft 1 in) and 49 kg (108 lb), Sasha Banks is 165cm (5 ft 5 in) and 52 kg (114 lb), where someone like Nia Jax is the exception. Look in the Lucha Libre field and you have people like Sexy Star at 160 cm (5 ft 3 in) and 57 kg (125 lb) beating men who are 185 cm ( 6 ft 1 in) and 96 kg (211 lb) like Johnny Mundo.

Gal Gabot as Wonder Woman fits in fine to all that for mine, yeah she's attractive, as was Linda Carter and the comic version of Wonder Woman. Seriously as far as the story goes she fits in fine, trained from a young age to become who she is, no different to what was seen in Kung Fu or any Jet Li or Bruce Lee movie. At 178 cm (5 ft 10 in) and 59 kg (130 lb), Gal is Jet and Bruce's size so I don't see a problem, bulk muscle means nothing vs toned.

reply

Bale was around 200lb (90kg) for Batman... there's a clip of him saying how one of the crew joked "are we shooting batman or fatman?!"... he was likely even bigger before cutting to get to the 200lb weight by shooting time...

Looking at the two, it's likely Bale was heavier than Hemsworth who played Thor...

reply

Yeah I'm way wrong on that bit, somehow in my mind he was smaller, looking at pics it seems I confused the Bale in Batman with the Bale doing the press tours promoting it. The actors who have played Spider-man or Grant Gustin as The Flash would have been a better example, even Stephen Amell as Arrow would have been a better example, while cut not so bulky.

Actually now I type it out, TV/Streaming seems to have more realistic looking ones than the movies do, guess it's due to the length of time and so as not to get continuity issues. Imagine if they had to bulk up for a 23 season Series and keep at it for 5 or so years, they'd be dropping like flies or like all those steroid wrestlers who have died in there 40's.

reply

Yeah... thats a lot of cheese burgers!

reply

Try an image google for Wonder Woman original comics. Not that muscular eh?

reply

The actor who played Ares in this movie did not have a strong physique. They are gods. They don't need weights to be strong.

reply

[deleted]

I don't disagree; however in this particular movie the only other god looked like a 60 year old man who would struggle to run a mile or lift 50 pounds of "weights".

reply

[deleted]

I'm saying that gods don't need to have great physiques to be strong, and this movie was consistent in that presentation. I don't think it was a bad decision.

It can be hard to accept movies and tv where waifish women (who aren't gods or don't have some superpower) can easily beat up multiple men in close combat, even when those men are well trained and much bigger. I feel like those kinds of criticisms have merit even if I'm ok ignoring them.

Have you seen the statues of the women godesses?

Diana is a Roman goddess. Her Greek name is Artemis. Blame the comic writers for that one. Here she is - the goddess of hunting, usually depicted with a bow:

Yes, but it's the writers of the comics who should've done that. Obviously in the comics she's not literally the Roman goddess and she's not at all like Artemis. The authors (many iterations with different authors) probably didn't care too much about this. Nevertheless, I don't think that muscles make her powers more believable at all, as they are orders of magnitude beyond what muscles can produce, and basically her powers are magical, such as her energy blast, whatever the F that is.

reply

[deleted]

Because the comics artists drew him that way. Superman did in fact look way more muscular than Chris Reeve in the comics.

reply

Ares is basically in disguise throughout the movie and when he's in battle he is a huge CG character. He doesn't need to be jacked. WW however is not and is an Amazon warrior and should have more muscle than Gadot. Also she is a horrible actress

reply

Bruce Willis was never jacked. He just had good tough guy face.

Actually that poster made me do a double take. That's a shield she's holding! Thought she was preggers with at least twins there!

Here is a believable wonder woman.

A demi-god/Amazon does not have to appear muscular in order to kick ass, it's genetic.

reply

[deleted]

She's a freakin' goddess, man!

Gods, demigods, spirits, and deities have sources of power other than muscles, they can be massive or tiny or skinny or totally incorporeal, and still be the doom of mortals. Or other fictional deities.

When humans were asked to make an artistic representation of the Gods, they made something that looked like big and powerful humans. But if you look at the myths themselves, you'll find that the Gods could take any form, and would appear to humans as swans or showers of gold or visions sent to the oracle or whatever. If a God could take the form of a bull, why couldn't one take the form of a skinny woman?

And incidentally, the Amazons of Greek myth weren't immortal or divine, they were just another tribe of humans. Although they did claim descent from (hur hur hur) Ares.

Ifthat swan is actually an Olympian God in disguise, it could pick up that bull and throw it all the way to Australia, and then fry any solid bits that are left into charcoal with a bolt if lightning! It could beat Hulk AND Thor combined in the arena!

Same as if it took the form of a skinny woman, you puny and slow-witted mortal.

reply

[deleted]

If you knew the least little thing about Greek myths, you'd know that yes, there's a reason I'm talking about gods taking the form of swans.

Dumbass.

It seems like feminine boys prefer Waif Woman to how she's supposed to look.
