Hate to cry racism, but...

I do not see anything racist about this movie insofar as the script and story are concerned. However, (of course there was a however) the intro J. Geils Band toon "Mean Mamma Jamma," vocalized by Peter Wolf, is an audio minstral show. Every time I hear this song (and I hear it a lot, living in the Boston area) I cringe. I do not have a problem with this film, but the intro song is so repulsively offensive and racist (as are Geils Band and Wolf) that I have to turn it off every time. "Mean Mamma Jamma" needs to go the way of "Song of the South."

The song is "Whammer Jammer", moron.

The internet is infested with racism. So is real life tbh. You won't notice if you're Caucasian.

I don't know about the racism, but the song sucked balls -- messy sounding insolent noise that did not play well against the action -- and introspect was a good sign of how bad this film was. Thanks for helping me realize it.

I didn't see anything racist about this movie at all. I don't like when people just look for racism everywhere. They end up finding racism where non exists.

That said I don't think talking about racism keeps it going. We need to talk about race and racism so that we can learn. We need to remember the past so that we are not doomed to repeat it. It is not race itself or the act of noticing that someone is different that causes problems. It is when we punish people for being different that causes problems.

Agreed.

seems to me it's not racism you have a problem with, but the J.Geils Band and Peter Wolf. Get over it.
As for our Canadian friend, you claim to be non-racist, but it's ok to lump all Americans together under one judgmental statement? Hmmm...kinda like a racist would do to someone of a different race?

seems legit.

I don't understand most of you people writing on this thread.
I'm from East Europe. I haven't seen anything racial in the movie
concerning black people, but that's just me; maybe black person would be offended.
(still watching it, now I'm at 20 mins or so)
However, I notice something "racial", better to say chauvinistic or nationalistic, I don't know the right term, but here it is:
Was it necessary that the annoying kid (that calls Hancock *beep* and Hancock throws him in the air) had a French accent?
Like in all French are bad guys cause they oppose our righteous fight in Iraq or something like that?

The song was originally written by Carl Carlton, a black man. It was a big hit back in the early 80s urban hits.

i can't find the song. can you provide a link?

blackface doesn't really bother me. i think too much is made of it sometimes.

the song in question is 'whammer jammer', not the Carl Carlton smash hit from early 80s
