How did Pinbacker not go insane after seven years alone?

How was he able to stay sane after so many years alone?

As captain he probably knew of a backup plan for Icarus 1 and kept himself sane that way, he was completely determined to stop any attempt to restart the sun. And when you add religion to the mix, insanity becomes its own purpose.

Seemed to me he had already become insane. He was well off in his insanity, impatiently waiting for the end and conversing with God.

Walking around in the nuddy, smeared in s..t and covered in burns while quoting scripture and administering unnecessary surgical procedures on people must be commonplace in the OP's house.

His appearance was the beginning of the stupidity countdown on this film.

What kind of movie we're you watching, the guy was a total religious psycho lunatic. His reason was gibberish. Seriously don't they do some kind of severe psyche evaluation before space trips like this? Religious scientists or astronauts should be immediately disqualified, as faith has no place in science. As it is purely man made fiction to ease the mind for pretty much any reason giving false hope to those weaker minded vegetables. Over 93% of the most elite scientists are atheists and the remaining 7 are either undecided or neutral or religious. Good to know that majority of smart people see religion for what useless thing it is for a capable mind.

The increase in human knowledge is the cause of the decline of religions.

You need to watch the movie again, and pay attention this time; the clues are all there.

a) Pinbacker was not a Christian.
b) The mission of Icarus II got into danger in the first place because of (arrogant) "scientific" considerations/reservations from Searle and Capa.
c) The only reason that the mission eventually succeeded, was because of Mace's zeal and strong faith.

Was he played by Sam Neil or was that Event Horizon?

If religion is the cause of and continuance of ignorance, what's your excuse?

As someone who personally knows more than a few active members within the science community who happen to also be people of faith, I find your assertion that they should be "weeded out" from all scientific circles (because of a -private- decision concerning -personal- beliefs) to be deplorable.

The bias you believe taints their pursuit of scientific truth doesn't even begin to eclipse your own very aggressive biased views towards those who believe in at least the possibility of a greater consciousness than their own.

Stop being so asinine; good science will speak for itself and whether or not someone is a good scientist will never be determined by their being Buddhist, Atheist, Christian, or Muslim.

So if someone goes crazy and thinks he sees purple dinosaurs, that must mean he was a Paleontologist before he went crazy.

Who are the elite scientists of whom you speak? Do they include people like Josef Mengele? I'm pretty sure he was once considered an elite scientist. He wasn't religious. So according to your logic, we should place his opinions very highly.

And believe it or not, there was a time when the majority of smart people believed a lot of really dumb things as well as fundamentally misunderstanding the way things really are. Like the Earth being flat, the Earth being the center of the universe, bloodletting as a means of curing disease, etc. Show me scientific proof of the absence of god and I'll convert to your scientific religion. Certainly, these really smart, atheist, elite scientists of yours must be able to prove that by now.
