Hands down atonement yes. And maybe this might be a little less what u were looking for but I think you'll enjoy it still the same-Becoming Jane.

I'd say Out of Africa, The Notebook, Atonement, The English Patient and Pearl Harbor.

As others said Atonement is great (and a big step up from this) and also Australia is another film which comes to mind.

North and South - (not to be confused with the movie of the same title starring Patrick Swayze)

A BBC Mini-series with Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe. Excellent! Highly recommended.

As everyone has said... Atonement if you are looking for a drama/romance period film involving War torn England.

If you are looking for a movie vaguely similar to The Painted Veil... I would suggest The Children of Huang Shi. Has Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Radha Mitchell in war torn China during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

You might like the "Joy Luck Club"; it's about a young Chinese-American woman trying to understand and meld traditional Chinese roots with a modern Western world. Bring a couple of hankies.
