To me, The Lord of the Rings was much more exciting as a movie. People complain about things like excluding Tom Bombadil from the movies but, to me, the movies retained most essential plot elements while making the action sequence so much more visceral.

The book was great, and I absolutely love it. However, Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable bring something to the movie that takes the story up a notch.
