"I'm starting to believe that every person that gives any bad reviews for this film or has bad things to say about the actors in it or anyone else involved, that they should be investigated and locked up and are in fact and have something to with the murders and the truth, they want the truth to be laughed at and covered up. Why else give a film with a message all the bad hype unless its just that. They are trying their hardest (typing away, word of mouth, printed reviews) to make people not want to watch this film (containing the truth) for its release so they can continue going to the factory areas in mexico (crossing the border, if they aren't already down there) to continue their killings. "
well, no. I agree that people are giving biased reviews on it, and many go in with the idea of "Anything with Jennifer Lopez sucks, so this will too." And then any weak moments are magnified by the critic because he/she doesn't care about the good parts (this is not just Jennifer Lopez flicks). However, you can't say that because someone doesn't like the movie that they automatically have something to do with the murders. I didn't like Titanic, did I put the Iceberg there?

Here's the thing about this film. Jennifer Lopez has a lot of baggage with her, and anything she does will carry with it all that baggage, from the gossip of the rumor mill, to her big butt, to her attempts to be a singer/actor, and her personal life. All of that factor into people's opinion of this movie, not in the that order ;)
However, after having viewed the film, I must say that this goes beyond Jlo. By the way, if you're a fan of Gregory Nava films, this is a good one to add in that category.
The actors were all great, we see their motivations, and we also see that not everything is so black and white. Each of them has a personal obstacle they are trying to overcome, and I think the film does an excellent job of setting the story up.
The actual topic of the film couldn't be anymore relevant and urgent. The raping of women who work in maquiladoras in long shifts who on their way home in the early or late hours of the day are raped and killed by an unknown number of men. All of this due to the company's sub-human treatment. They don't provide protection for their employees or let them out at reasonable hours. While working they are treated like robots in the movie, as the loud speakers blast out orders demanding they speed up their work if they are falling behind in the assembly line, repeating this message until the production catches up to their pre-established speed.
These factories produce the computers, televisions, and the myriad electronice devices that the U.S. consumes in droves, and it came about, as the movie explains, because of the free trade from NAFTA(or slave trade as JLo's character quips at her boss played by Martin Sheen). The movie shows how this free trade is nothing more than a way for the rich to maintain their power and wealth while the poor suffer with the crumbs that are thrown their way. It is a smoke screen, if you will, for the machinations of the powerful against the powerless, which has been happening since the dawn of history. What makes this story poignant is that the official version of the rapes, the free trade agreement, and the exploitation of the poor either do not admit they exist or they rush quickly to cover it up or kill those who are trying to expose it, which is where Jlo and Antonio Bandera's characters come into play.
If you've read this far, and I know how people are about spoilers, I would like to express how this movie touched me in a way I thought was going to be impossible given the already charged topics at hand. Jlo's character and the struggles she faces as a Latina are only apparent after she comes to this whole other world in Mexico, while trying to get a juicy story that will land her a Foreign Correspondant gig that apparently pays a lot more. The realizations that she has about her identity, her principles, and how that ties into her past in the movie, were gems. In the end for me personally, the film was about not forgetting where you came from, and being proud of that heritage. This is a topic covered extensively in another film by Gregory Nava called My Family (Mi Familia). A change occurs in Jlo's character that is evidenced physically on the screen, to metaphorically symbolize her interior change about her own identity, when she changes the color of her hair from blonde to brunette and then decides to keep that hair color for the rest of the movie. It also symbolizes her acceptance and remembrance of her *SPOILER ALERT* real parents versus her adopted ones, and how that ties her to the story of these women who are raped and also have no voice or choice because they are as powerless as she was when her parents were murdered (or killed accidently I didn't understand that part completely).
So to answer your question, I loved the movie 100%. I hope you watch it as I too was starting to believe the negative press about this movie from these boards (thanks a lot naysayers you made me want to see the movie for myself).
Do as I do when watching a movie. Ignore and erase from your mind opinions of a movie. The best opinion of a movie is your own, and you can only acquire it by watching the movie for yourself. Hope you enjoy it. I know I did.

Well, I saw this film yesterday here in Italy. And I absolutely liked that. Great performance by Jennifer.
shareIt's a shame that people automatically hate anything by Jennifer Lopez without even seeing it. Jennifer is not a bad actor. I like most of the movies she's been in. I even enjoy Maid In Manhattan whenever I see it. I like Enough and I like that movie with George Clooney. I really like her in Bordertown. She does a good job and the movie is well done. If you don't like Jennifer, don't come here telling people not to see this movie. There is nothing wrong with Jennifer or the movie.

I´m from Spain. I love Jennifer. I´m a great fan of hers. I saw the movie several weeks ago with my mother and my brother. Honestly, the movie is not good. It has a great story and i liked the actors (Maya Zapata is fantastic!), but the screenplay is bad. It´s boring in some parts. I think they could have done a movie much more realistic and dramatic and written a good screenplay, which is the main part of a movie.
I love Jennifer. I already got her new Spanish album. I think she will get the #1 here in Spain next week. At least, i hope so!
Un besazo a tos!
I tried very hard to convence my self that this is a good film...But i can not! I like the other two movies i have seen from Gregory Nava: El Norte is a beautyfull convination of reality and poetry. It is visually superb. Selena, which made J.Lo the person she is now, it´s an acceptable film. A good Biographical film, decent. So I was expecting a lot from this one.
I do like the elements of the story but it is an agressive hollywood attempt of filmaking. Maybe Gregory Nava does not know how to make those hollywood formulas, that some times work on those type of cliche flicks, but here they are not used propertly-The hollywood formulas such as: The perverse, sick of the head rich guy, the heroine that goes against everythng and solves it all without police, friend, just her and the ¨the protagonist¨, the indian girl that was rape.
I mean, a journalist that affoers her selve to be kignapped so her friend can catch her!!!!
I am very dissapointed.
PS: EVen the use of music is a wanna be hollywood type. Gregory Nava should worry about continuing with his vision, a more poetic one, a more hispanic one!
PS2: !I liked Antonio Banderas part and Juanes appearence!-Please take it with all possible irony!
Just seen the film here in Italy. Strong doucmentary hollywood-style, which is no bad thing. Can understand why it might not have a strong distribution in USA and its not because of the quality of the film or th acting but because of the message. It puts the boot into this form of savage bordertown capitalism where the Church, Politicians and businessmen are all potrayed as equally compromised and corrupt. The film leaves you with the feeling that it all might be very true! And made me want to discover more about Juarez. So I reckon it did its job.
shareI saw the movie today with my girlfriend and we both liked the movie. We give a 6/10.
i just saw the movie and i think it was great people just got to be able to get all this information all at once is not a movie for you to enjoy and say ooh what a great movie :D is a movie to watch and learn whats going on out there.I never knew about these murders the way this movie explains it and now that i've seen it im once again not surprised the US had its nasty hands in this. Believe it or not the us is a tyrant and the people in the US run this tyrant and let it get away with murder, abuse, etc.. We have to wake up and realize we are not the good guys.

Well said..I totally agree with you.
When we watch a movie our own opinion should matter.
I like a decent amount of movies that people or critics reviewed as "bad", or "unwatchable". But hey if I like the movie, I like the movie. My opinion is the only one that matters.
I went into watching this movie with no expectations, but I really got wrapped up into it. I thought all of the actors (including one of my faves, Sonia Braga) did a great job with the script. The storyline was great, and I love the subtext with the attacker possibly being a figment of Eva's imagination. Job well done, everyone.
sharesaw it yesterday and thought it's not as bad. j-lo's acting was not at it's best, but all in all its not so bad

Jennifer was great ,i think she acts with her heart, actually i dont call it acting
she lives with the roles,i like this type od actors
The Story shows the essential real story thats why I liked it...of course its a hollywood movie so some fantasy is allowed...although I believe they should have given more enphasis on the power of the wealthy people involved in the story, I liked Maya Zapata's performance...if you are interested in reading what i call the real story go to:

Right now the government (Federal, State & local) are in what i call a campaign to mislead the people saying the city of Juarez is not that violent, and that all citizens of Juarez should stand out and tell the world about how great our city is, which in fact could be, but hey there are some people like me who are not brainwashed that easy. Believe me Juarez is violent, the killings I believe continue and both US and Mexican authorities know and sometimes are linked to the wealthy families described in the film.

I disagree. Yes, it is a horrible tragedy that so many women are being tortured and murdered (yet we seem to forget the men that have suffered that fate too, in at least the same numbers)...however, the tragedy is mainly within certain demographics and areas. Outside of those, Juarez is no more violent than any other large city in the U.S.
I'm a young woman, and I ride the bus at night in Juarez, alone. You live there, you learn where not to go and how to take care of yourself. Now I'm in San Antonio, TX, and I don't dare ride the bus here at night.
The movie by itself is good. I applaud that they didn't keep the problem within Juarez only, but expanded on it as it is. The acting was well executed and the dialogue/plot was accurate enough. My only issue with it is how the photography portrayed Cd. Juarez under an ugly light. Literally. My house is a few blocks from The Flag (almost made it into the shot), and it looked unrecognizable. That area looks near inhospitable in the movie, and it is not. I didn't like the extra desert-y atmosphere they gave it, but it's no big deal. It'd be nicer if the whole city hadn't seemed as if it looked the same as Anapra alone.
Me (sorry for borrowing your idea):
Raised in Juarez,
Resides in the U.S. for 2 yrs now,
Daughter of a former maquila manager in Torreón (both hating every aspect of it, until he quit).
College activist working on immigration and NAFTA issues.
I just watched it and really enjoyed it. Thought that it was well done and spooky. Would like to purchase it on DVD once it is released.
