other great movies about the conflict?

any recommendations?

reply

I doubt you'll find it at Blockbuster but I recommend "Waiting" (aka Attente) which is a Palestianian move about spending generations in refugee camps.

By no means is it a "great" movie but it is touching, insightful, entertaining and even humorous at points. It also really helped me understand a part of that conflict that I really hadn't thought much about.

Here's the link to it:

reply to the comment of "speedy1295" above:

I would say kind of the same that happens when Israeli war planes bomb down Gaza night after night while people are sleeping, or Israeli tanks enter refugee camps (eg. Jenin) & run over houses with people inside!!
the difference is that one comes from the richest war state in the world (after the US that is!) & the other come from desperate individuals left with no choice but to explode themselves!!

see: OCCUPATION 101 if you can't understand while people under occupation revolt! or read history books about Ireland, South Africa, India , Algeria...the subject of Palestine is not really that complicated if you read history.

Exactly, karmaflic. As Khaled said in the movie, if they had airplanes they wouldn't need suicide bombers. Arrogant Westerners like to claim moral superiority when they kill far more people than militants do. Death from the skies and death from 3 feet away mean the same thing to the people dying.

Voting Democrat over Republican is like asking your rapist to use a condom.

If you want to understand the conflict, you have to watch these documentaries:

1) OCCUPATION 101 (essential)
2) Route 181: Fragments of a Journey in Palestine-Israel (for better understanding)
3) Death in Gaza

In Drama about the conflict, watch:
1) Bab el shams (The gate of sun) (essential)
2) Divine intervention.
2) Private

Enjoy!

i recently saw a movie called "to die in jerusalem" and i would definately recommend it as a documentary to watch on the israeli'palestinian conflict.

it deals with both sides of a suicide bombing in jerusalem:
the mother of an israeli victim in the bombing and the mother of the palestinian suicide bomber and their opinions and interactions. definately a good movie to see to understand both sides of the conflict

Waltz with Bashir!

Agreed, speedy1295. It's quite easy to be sympathetic to those that employ bombs of radiant light, but another story altogether when you are confronted with the gruesome wake of an attack like that. I thought it was an extremely interesting movie, however, and I appreciate what the director was trying to do. It didn't change my views about the conflict, though. I'm still very sympathetic to both sides of the conflict, but completely unsympathetic to the horrible ways that both sides are handling nearly everything.

I agree that the movie did a good job about being neutral and was more concerned with the process of radicalization... however, I don't think it is neutral nor fair to the victims' side to leave out the grotesque result of one of these acts.

There is a very good film from Lebanon: "Le cerf-volant" (The Kite)

A wonderful documentary: "Promises".

An Italian-Palestinian production called "Private"

I didn't like Munich at all, but it deals with Israeli-Palestine conflict, albeit from a different perspective.

Also you gotta watch the documentary "One Day in September".

And of course Israel's entry for the Oscar this year: Waltz with Bashir.

There are more films that deals with this conflict, but right now these films are the best ones (Besides Paradise Now) that comes to my mind.
