Try "Copycat". It is a very underrated exceptional thriller of the 90s dealing indirectly with Z. Dermot Mulroney is also in it. Holly Hunter and Sigourney Weaver are at their best imo. Very creepy and interesting.

I have a soft spot for The Mean Season which has Kurt Russell once again proving that he's a much better actor than he;s generally given credit for.

i agree! i loved that movie even though it could have been a lot better

fincher's dragon tattoo is actually really fcking excellent, and i'd say it's in the same genre, kind of epic neo noir murder mystery
all the presidents men

Seconded on Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Very similar in tone, style, pace, and subject matter.

The 1968 movie "The Boston Strangler", also based on real events.
Directed by Richard Fleischer, starring Tony Curtis as the strangler and Henry Fonda as the lead investigator.

Another couple of Richard Fleischer films worth mentioning are Compulsion and 10 Rillington Place.

"Everyone is ignorant, only on different subjects". Will Rogers (1879-1935)

I've seen almost all the movies mentioned here, and the only one that comes close to similar to Zodiac and feel and the epic scope is JFK.

All the President's Men is good, but it's much different. Part of the reason Zodiac works is it was made after the fact, like JFK, so it's not made within the exact same culture that it takes place in. Zero Dark Thirty is not like Zodiac either, for this same reason, plus the filmmaking behind both Zodiac and JFK is special. Zodiac with it's great use of CGI and setting, JFK with its editing and varied use of film stock.

Basically, if you haven't seen JFK, watch it. As Zodiac is about why serial killers fascinate us as a society and as people, JFK is about why conspiracy theories exist (because they make for great storytelling, and play on things that will likely always remain uncertain).

Weird to see Moneyball being mentioned in this thread more than once. It therefore can't be a coincidence that these two films are just about my favourite two of the past several years

I have to agree with others who said "JFK" also I would throw in "The Day of the Jackal" - 1973. Great meticulous thriller.

How about:

The Maltese Falcon
The Third Man
High and Low
Double Indemnity
The Killing
and
Brick

All of these are somewhat methodical, murder mystery, whodunit types.

The Game
Black Swan
Silence of the Lambs
Prisoners
