shareGo watch the 1970s paranoia-classics that inspired Fincher: "All The President's Men," "The Parallax View," and ESPECIALLY "The Conversation," which is a stone-cold Watergate-era classic.
These movies aren't about serial killers, but they've got that feel to 'em y'know?
While I agree that it has the same feeling of paranoia I think 'The Parallax View' is not in the league of "Zodiac", "All the Presidents Men" and "The Conversation".
I would also add "J.F.K." to the list to watch if you haven't seen it.
Obviously the subject matters could not be more different, but I was reminded of Zodiac when I watched Moneyball recently...Only because they both ostensibly belong to very common subgenres -- serial killer movies and sports movies -- but are really about the behind-the-scenes, inner workings of the subjects and are more interested in people talking to move the plots along rather than the typical flashy action that both subgenres usually present. I think they're both wonderful examples of steering clear of cliches and delivering the pleasures of their genres more intellectually than superficially.

They really didnt "Hollywood" this up -- its the best that could be done - given the LACK of actually solving these murders.
OH - i gave this a 9 - really like -- that may not be obvious from comment above.
I actually got that same thing while watching Moneyball. Good post.
shareThe Onion Field is equally good as a depiction of destructive obsession and guilt. It has the added dimension of depicting the criminals' efforts to bilk the legal system which I found fascinating.
"Haven't they replaced you with a coin-operated machine yet?"
Certainly the films that others have already mentioned. Also check out Network (1976) and Prince Of The City (1981), both by Sydney Lumet.
And if you want a great film on a serial killer police investigation check out Prime Suspect (1991). It's a two episode TV movie, but believe me don't let that put you off. It's extremely well made and realistic, going into alot of detail into the investigation.
