Watched this movie the other day after having not seeing it for a few years, and it was just as fantastic as I remember. The movie should've been nominated for best picture, and Ruffalo and Downey Jr should've been nominated.
I can't even remember what was nominated and won in '07...most people don't. Shows that the true quality of a movie and its performances remains undiminished despite the lack of awards.
Watching this movie as we speak, or type I guess. Couldn't agree more. I love David Fincher's movies but this is my favorite hands down. First off, the cast is first rate. This was Robert Downey Jr's big comeback movie in which he played the aloof substance abusing writer to perfection. A role that he didn't need to research much if you know what I mean. Mark Ruffalo is always good but in this movie he is outstanding. His finest hour in my opinion. Gyllenhaal is solid as always and let's give a shout out to Anthony Edwards who was perfect as Ruffalo's partner.
I admire how accurate the movie was to the actual events and investigational well. I saw a documentary on the Zodiac killings in which the man who survived the lake stabbings was shocked how accurate the scene in the movie was to what really happened. He was so overcome with emotion that he had to leave the theatre apparently.
Lastly, I love how this movie has that 'All the Presidents Men' feel to it. The whole journalistic and investigative thing. Love movies like that and this movie is a great example.
This movie is underrated and never got the publics respect like it should have. Zodiac was critically acclaim upon its release but didn't seem register to a broad audience. I think the problem was that people were expecting to see another 'Se7en' and instead got a true to life crime drama. It's a subtle masterpiece and movie that I hope influential to aspiring directors and actors alike.
It is absolutely fantastic. Can watch it all the time. Story. Composition. Dialogue. Acting. It's fantastic. Don't understand people who complain about "pacing". It's a procedural film that demonstrates how things like this (unsolved crimes) can happen despite the best efforts of intelligent, highly qualified individuals doing their best to solve the case (referring to jurisdiction issues, conflicting eye witness reports, crime scene issues, mistakes like the wrong description going out over the radio, leading the officers to not approach the suspicious white male, etc etc). Just a fantastic film. Great book as well.
It's been on Showtime's rotation lately. I always watch it whenever it's on, just letting my DVR fill up with other stuff I'm not caught up on. Something about David Fincher's movies, they have a high re-watchability factor. Did the same thing with Social Network, Fight Club, and Dragon Tatoo.... and still doing it with Gone Girl.
I would've nominated it for best picture, director, screenplay, cinematography, supporting actor with Downey and ruffalo there, production design etc. assassination of,Jesse James was also snubbed that year
I was very surprised when I saw that there was no Oscar nominations for this movie. The acting and the direction from Fincher are Oscar-worthy, I also loved the production design and the cinematography.
I see people referring to the 2007 oscars but wasn't this movie released in March 2007? So it couldn't be in a 2007 Oscars which happen end of February. It would be for the Oscars 2008.
