This or the Prestige?
For me it's the prestige. What are your thoughts?
shareThe Prestige for me aswell.
On a sidenote i think i must rewatch this and hope there was some good explination to how the ghost tricks worked.. I did see that they showed the blueprint for building the orangetree and i thought oh neat now they might show how the other tricks where made but either i missed it or they skipped that part.
The prestige is on another level imho but they are two completely different movies
shareAgreed. Prestige is light years ahead. In terms of acting, story, plot, pretty much everything...
But as you said, they were going for vastly different audiences, they just both happen to use magic as a plot device...
"Look, Hank. Have you ever seen such a beautifully punted baby?" - King of the Hill
A few things hinted to the ghost trick early on in the film like the lamps he was working on and how careful he asked the staff to be with them. Also the projector being used is probably the easiest one. I believe though the trick involved his lamps because at some point you could see the images of the ghost flickering like a candle fire or something like that which was the same with that projector that used a similar light source.

Lord Of The Ringtones, Orange Net.
They are both completely different genres of films. "The Illusionist" is an art house film harkening back to the silent film genre with an emphasis on acting and narrative.
"The Prestige" is more of a studio film designed to appeal to a large audience. It emphasises action, narrative, and plot devices to keep the audience intrigued.
It is all a matter of which type of film one prefers.
I agree, and I really hate this question. The answer is both because they're both fantastic films with different plots and the only things they have in common really are the element of magic and their time periods. I loved The Illusionist for its visuals and its sense of whimsy and I loved The Prestige for its great story and acting. Watch both.
what is this in reference to?
Sodomy.

I think you got that backwards. The Illusionist is not an art house film just because it uses the visual style of silent films. It was entirely designed for large audiences. It's another typical romance story that happens to have a twist. A very entertaining film, but that doesn't change the fact that it was designed to appeal to a large audience.
The Prestige on the other hand emphasises on its characters and narrative, but that doesn't make it a film for the general audiences. It just happens to be an artistic and very entertaining film.
I agree pwrsf3 and much preferred The Illusionist for the acting and dialogue.
The actors were of higher quality than the Prestige. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are fine for drawing in younger crowds but Ed Norton and Rufus Sewell and the writing took the prize imo...but I have been watching movies for over 50 years so I have a lot to compare it to.
IMDb; where 14 year olds can act like jaded 40 year old critics...another poster
Definitely The Prestige
shareThe Illusionist was a great movie, but I thought the Prestige were a lot better.

The Prestige. It's the better movie for many reasons.
sharejust because they didn't explain how the ghost trick worked, doesn't mean it wasnt real
shareThe Prestige is better on all the points
shareMost of the things that happened in the illusionist weren't possible at all. Maybe the ghosts could've had an in-film explanation, but I doubt it would've been a convincing one. Even the orange tree was kind of fishy, even if we got to see the papers at the end.

I feel that "The Illusionist" was the better movie overall, but "The Prestige" had the better ending.
shareThe Prestige...not even close!
shareI saw this one first and thought the Prestige was a washed out, boring, predictable flop. This was FAR superior. One of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen.
shareI might need to watch both again (and I agree, they are different movies so it's not like they can't both be good) but I didn't enjoy watching the Prestige at all.
I didn't really care about any of the characters. None of them seemed to have much of an internal moral code. The wife who killed herself because she was married to a jerk, and left her little daughter behind to be raised by him? Really?
Neither of the magicians, their assistants or managers seemed to care deeply about anything or anyone (except of course, the ever present obsession with topping the other- honestly I didn't find that that interesting).
Sometimes I felt the film verged on melodrama.
And I really didn't quite get what was really happening with the duplicate machine, like I said I may have to watch it again.
The Illusionist on the other hand- had Edward Norton. Enough said. It was much more understated. The characters actually had some human depth. Paul Giomatti is always great. I loved the music. And, the ending actually surprised me!
I read that Liv Tyler was supposed to play Sophie- wish she would have. Jessica Biel was fine, but Liv and Edward together would have been amazing.
I think you need to watch the prestige again, it seemed to have flown over your head
