Surprisingly intense movie here

I take myself pretty seriously and am exceedingly self-important, therefore I don't generally waste my time on all but the most compelling cinema. Like I've only got one or two TV shows I'll lend my limited time to and after ensuring I've weeded out movies of questionable quality, probably watch only watch two or three of them a week.

That being said, this movie did not displease me. In fact, there were a number of parts where I found my self on the edge of my seat, my inner voice satisfied that, yes, this is what good movies are supposed to do. I remember this feeling. Being drawn in...caring about the fate of the characters. This is what good movies are all about!

That ALSO being said, this is a pretty good movie that'd have been friggin amazing had it had a huge Hollywood budget, but that the did exceedingly well with what they had. Kind of a spoiler, but my only real gripe: I wish people would have kept their heads down more...they needed to lay low damnit, bullets are whizzing overhead and they're popping their heads above cover like friggin whack-a-moles. Boing boing boing. A whole lot of people using their faces to stop bullets.

Anyway, if you're as super duper important as I am and want to enjoy a good war movie, I'd give this film a chance. Good character development, intense scenes, plenty of action with a whole bunch of satisfying enemy deaths, people getting shot up, exploded...screaming, flying bodies etc.

Also interesting to see the field work...how artillery and air support works so closely in tandem with infantry, how its coordinated through the field HQ there, miles away from the action. Interesting stuff in showing just how vital communications and teamwork are.

Thank you for your pretty important review.

I liked the movie, too!

Oh, by the way: why did they not have any helmets?

reply

Lol you're welcome. Yeah I don't know what that was about...I've no idea. Weird, huh?

I bet it was something to do with making sure we could see the entirety of the actors' faces at all times...or something Hollywood like that. Except in Australia.
Yeah pretty good for not being a big Hollywood war movie...was definitely impressed myself. Er...not displeased =D

I just did a Google picture search "australian soldiers vietnam".

All without helmets...

The helmets point is an interesting one. As I understand it, the Aussies conducted operations differently to the US in that they did not rely as much on air support and were a lot quieter in general, attracting much less attention. The standard Vietnam helmet was quite heavy and the Australians felt it didn't suit the way they operated. The helmet also wasn't able to stop bullets but was rather designed to protect against explosions and other debris flying around.

I felt a lot of it was derivative of Viet Nam war pics involving U.S. soldiers and some of the battle cinematography seemed Xeroxโ€™d from Saving Private Ryan but I have to agree with your reaction. Why do you think they had the short side story about the surfer girl singer? Seemed a little bit of a sidetrack

reply

Yes, the battle sequences were very tense and the Queensland filming location was a good stand in

Be sure to stick around for the credits, there is some excellent archival footage

Overall a very good war movie

reply

Yes it is. I always watch all the credits, and doing so provided an added bonus in this case. An excellent film: 8.5.

I agree, an excellent film. It reminded me of We Were Soldiers. I give it an 8.5.

Interesting, I think We Were Soldiers is a very good film and generally underrated. I shall have to look for Danger Close.

I loved We Were Soldiers, and if you liked it, you will like this film.
