I'm Thai ... and want to share some opinion about SHUTTER

First ... My English language is not good ... But I'm Thai and love "SHUTTER" ... when i read other topics i'd like to share some ... mmmm -*-
Some sentence may make you feel confuse ... please try to understand ^ ^"
(I'm so please if you edit it for correct)

And may be "SPOILEDDD!!!"

1. Why ... Asian Ghost Movies Must "long black haired girl ghost"
Some Thai (And I think other asian too) believes that ...
Nature give a man have a stronger body
And give a woman have a stronger mind (Including to mind of revenge)
when a woman was die there's only soul and mind ... they are so powerful than a man ... so ghost asian movies use a theme of girl ghost
... (However long hair can be some option of a ghost effect that make it more scary)

2. Why ... monk can see Natre on Tun's Neck?
In the movie that boy is not monk. he is "Nain" ... it's a Pre-Monk
And Some Thai believes that a children has a pure mind. Pure level will be decrease when they grow up. so some children can see a ghost.
But some person that have a third eye or have a mind practice can still see unbelievable thing though they've grown up
When Nain+Children = very very pure mind ... easier to see.

3. Compare to Ju-On, Ringu, 2 Sisters
in my opinion Shutter not appropriate to compare with Ju-On,Ringu and 2 sisters

Ghost from Ju-On and Ringu is not base on a real asian ghost(may be only Japanese ghost be like that - -")
in Thai the ghost can't kill people directly ... in Ju-On Kayako Kill people by herself with touching such as hanging by her hair and force people by her hand .. then people was disappear from the world(and go to Kayako'Land? *0*)
i think kayako turn herself to a powerful Devil or a Monster far away from "GHOST"
Thai Believe is ... Real Ghost Kill People by make them frighten, scare and panic with sudden appearing or illusion. Can't Kill Directly.
When People Feel much more scare They mind become to disfunction and lack of mind concentration. And do something without an awareness such as run away across the road and die with car crash, Car driving accident.
In Shutter Natre make people gets Mad and jump of the window. run away and fall from the ladder ... it's not like Natre pull the people to the window and kick them out.

about 2 sisters ... i think 2 sister is so dramatic and psychic. movie theme is not a ghost haunt.

The other horror movies that i think it's a ghost movie is "THE EYE" in my opinion it's based on a real ghost.
In Hollywood movie i think ghost from "WHAT'S LIES BENEATH" is based on a real ghost too.
If you say that ghost from Shutter is not different from Ju-On and Ringu. I think it's not true. and Can't discuss who is Original. (May be Because you are not an Asian or may be i wrong)

--------------------------------
However my No.1 horror movie is Ju-On ... (not ghost Movie)
I like the way Kayako kill people
When the law was set completely!!!(go in to her area(house)) ...
you can't run away from your destiny ...
nobody can stop her ...
her will GETS YOU!!
SO CRAZZZZYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!! and her can twist her joint everywhere. very very COOL!!!
Kayako is a superstar of a horror movie!!

(i think i ought to bomb her house from the outside before i have get in)

why do Thai ghosts weight so much? guy + ghost = 120 kilos! O_o

reply

Portuguese here, loved LOVED this movie. Just saw it and still have chills down my spine.

reply

im indian, but the superstitious beliefs are identical. This movie was indeed very scary.

reply

Shutter is not used Yūrei (Japanese Ghost)

Because...

1. Yūrei wear Kimono but Natre wear Thai's university form.

2. Some scenes (like a climbing down) Natre wear Pre-Doctor studies uniform (เสื้อกาวน์)

So, I think shutter cannot said that it's japannese horror film that hollywood though like that.

Thanks for the explaination, river-nate. Horror movies failed to impress me these days but Shutter truly an exceptional! T-horror anybody? Bring it on!

I'm a Thai too and what I find funny is that everyone actually said where they're from. Haha.

No doubt lol "I'm from America..." cute. Anyway, great post, very helpful to understanding the movie, and Thai ghosts v. Japanese ghost killing methods in general. I am still interested, tho, and don't think it is really answered, why creepy women are usually the ghosts in Asian cinema--Japan's got its yurei tradition (see post above/wikipedia), and as the OP says, it is a different type of ghost. But I've seen at least thirty Asian horror movies--Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and now Thai--and I can't recall one that had a male ghost. I understand the long hair, because traditionally that's what Asian women have had, but why female?

Thailand and Japan/Korea are pretty far flung, culturally speaking. Is it based in Buddhism or Confucianism or something? Any theories?

reply

I've noticed they not only like to use women but children as ghosts too. Women+children=freaky LOL.

I'm American and this movie scared the crap out of me. I've seen just about every American horror movie ever made, but none that I can recall, other than The Shining, gave me such chills as Shutter. I will probably refuse to watch any American remake based on this film, simply because I know they're going to ruin it! American audiences don't need to see Hollywood's remake of this movie, they need to see THIS movie!

reply

Wll done, river-nate. Your post was very interesting. I haven't seen the original Shutter, but the remake is on TV tonight. I hear it's not so good but I'll watch it anyway. Thanks for your comments!

- black haired girl ghost

The long black hair eerie girl is also based on some japanese folk legend as well, I found an article once on that but can't find it know or else I would have posted a link

GiggleGoth, thank you for the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yurei

It says that when the Yurei haunts is between 2 and 3 am, the "bewitching hour". This was shown in Shutter. Thanks for this link, a lot of knowledge and insight into Asian horror films! *thumbs up*
