It was 8 last time I came here, and I think it deserved it.

It's a great movie, there's nothing really bad about it. WHat about it makes you think it doesn't deserve the score it has?

yeah, Im curious about that too. I watched it on the plane and I thought it was pretty darn good .

Movies that do most everything right deserve 9's at least in my book.

Just because someone likes one Japanese movie you don't like, you think they like all Japanese movies? There'd be hundreds of English films we like that you hate, but that doesn't mean we like it just because it's English, does it?

It may seem people like Japanese films just because they are Japanese, but it's because the movies that get a lot of good reviews from their get much more known overseas. So the majority of films you can see over here are ones that were liked a lot over there, so of course a lot of us would like it too.

But... I can't help laughing at Japanophiles

I agree. I think the score (heh) for this film is a little inflated.

I wasn't sure between a 7 and a 6, but I went with my initial feeling about giving it a 6.

Don't get me wrong. I really enjoyed the movie. I was worried in the first ten or twenty minutes that I might not like it that much, but fortunately I was proven wrong. It also made me feel some very strong nostalgia for being in a band, and kind of makes me want to pick the saxophone back up.

I think the rating a movie gets doesn't necessarily reflect how worthy it is of being watched. I gave this a six because it's not exactly, say, a cinematic masterpiece and the humor is pretty silly. That doesn't bother me, but I think those things make it not as worthy of an 8 or better. Despite only giving it a six, I would certainly recommend it to people. Hopefully my rationale is understandable.

So, I think, if you loved something, that doesn't necessarily mean you have to give it an 8/9/10. You can be critical and still think something was meaningful or entertaining.

I think thats understandable but it is an unfair way to judge all movies. There are different kinds of movies, its unfair to hold them all up to the same yardstick based on what a cinematic masterpiece would have. Movies like Swing Girls are made to achieve a different effect than Masterpieces, which are traditionally more dramatic. Swing Girls succeeds at knowing what kind of movie it should be, it wasn't made to achieve the kind of effect a masterpiece has and so it should be judged on how well its slice of life elements and comedy elements work within the story.

I understand what you are saying and I actually do like all the kinds of movies, especially movies that can be considered cinematic masterpieces, but I just don't think all movies need to be judged on one set of standards.

That sort of thinking lacks perspective and that lack of perspective is why the Oscars and some Film Critics are loosing their relevance in the Film Industry. There are so many movies and actors that are just Oscar Baiting by copying the traditional elements in movies and performances that are considered cinematic masterpieces instead of actually trying to a make a movie that is good and works well. The sad thing is that those movies go on to be rewarded based on that tired old formula which ranks some genres as automatically better than all others.

I think it should be higher then 7.6 it has right now. I'd go 8 personally, I think it's a fantastic comedy that has you coming out at the ending with a smile. Sure I can see some maybe not liking the humour, which can be very OTT in places. But the performances just make the film and the last 10 minutes doesn't leave you with a smile on you're face I don't know what will.

I never felt a lull during the whole film, something that I think another Japanese music coming of age film Linda, Linda, Linda has sadly, it's slow pace doesn't help it in places. Although Linda is still a very good film.
