I agree. The drama in middle and high school is horrendous.

Honestly, I think the movie was a little over-dramatic...calling her a slut just cuz she talked to a boy, just talked, nothing more.....but middle school and high school is really tough, especially for girls. My experiences were never that bad but these things do happen, and it's all about jealousy, trying to make yourself feel like you're better than someone else.

reply

They didn't call her a slut because she talked to him. They called her that because he talked to her--and they realized that it meant that he was interested in Vanessa, not Stacy. This obviously hurt Stacy, and perhaps embarrassed her a little--in other words, it's what the talking meant, not the act itself. It's certainly not Vanessa's fault but Stacy's other friends, who were jealous of Vanessa's status as Stacy's closest friend, saw this as a opportunity to demonize Vanessa.

Middle school is the worst. Things get better in high school usually, and college is infinitely better. Just hang on, kids :)

reply

Girls do this because they feel powerless and small, and they think that attacking others and preying on the weak is a way to help them feel strong and powerful. Why do criminals beat up and kill old ladies and kids? Why do they use guns instead of taking on someone their own size and stregth mano a mano? Because people have all this pride inside that they have to feel better than the next guy. Why do people speed, cut people off, don't let people in on the freeway? I mean there's ALWAYS someone on the road ahead of you anyway so what is the thrill in putting a person behind you? You're just behind the next guy, anyway.

People are idiots.

And teen girls also desperately need the validation of males that they are worthy of being alive i.e. "pretty." Without that approval from males, girls feel like nothing.

Mainly its all in one word... JEALOUSY. Obviously in this movie Stacy was madly jealous of Vanessa since she was pretty, she was smarter than her, and the guy that she liked, like Vanessa instead of her. So she found a way to channel that jealousy through being mean to her so called friend. At least thats what I think.

reply

I think it was Nikki who was jealous, otherwise, she wouldn't have stirred all this mess. I think Stacy did it just to not feel left out, your thinking changes when you're suddenly in a group, and I think that's what happened. Though I believe she did feel awful for some of the things that took place.

Some people count sheep. Doesn't work with AlwaysCool, just gets him excited.

reply

No, guys don't have feelings. It was even said in the movie.

Nah, I'm just his father. But you're his coach. You're like a father to him.

reply

bc it makes them feel good about themselves
and bc they have power over them

Middle school was possibly the worst time of my life. I was picked on for being short and because I wasn't popular. I remember walking into my sixth grade class and this kid I had a bit of a crush on called me fat and ugly. First off, I was twenty pounds underweight. It didn't really make sense to me but he called me fat anyways. The seventh grade I was picked on for dancing in the talent show the year before. Jen, a girl I was friends with in the sixth grade started ridiculing my dancing skills. And the last but not least, the eighth grade; I had all the "popular" girls in my class and everyday I would walk in and notice the ultimate "it" girl looking at me, mockingly. During those years, I tried so hard to fit in that I forgot about how many people actually wanted to be my friend. Middle school is definitely one of our worst years where kids are trying too hard to grow up and stick to the latest fashion trends. High school is definitely a whole new world. Now, those girls I was picked on are controlled by me since I'm part of the student council and I'm an athlete. The teens seem a bit more relaxed and comfortable with themselves, something many middle schoolers are lacking. At least, that's the way it is in my high school.

Most girls in middle school and high school have a superiority complex.
Maybe they don't want to inconvenience themselves and jeopardize their popularity.

reply

All of you guys are correct, but add this. Females by nature are clique-oriented, and anybody who challenges a particular clique's code must be punished, lest the group stand to lose its power to what it believes to be more superior or the slightest threat. In short, what will not be assimilated will either be ignored (ugly, weird, or dumb kid) or destroyed (prettier, smarter, or more advantaged kid).

Nikki knew that Vanessa out shined her in grades and in rank among Stacy's clique. Thus, the only way for her to beat out the competition was for her to bring attention to the fact that 'Vanessa' sought to 'betray' their friendship by way of connecting with what's-his-name. I loved the way that Nikki played the Iago-like part so well.

The are petty, immature, and jealous. I never understood it. I could never do this to someone else. It wasn't over a boy, it looked like it but it wasn't. It was over Nikki being jealous of how close Vanessa and Stacey were and Nikki wanting to be Stacey's best friend and as popular. It's severely twisted.

The girls in the movie were petty, vicious and narrow-minded. They were determined to be popular any way they could even if it meant humiliating someone else, running that person out of school, or even driving that certain someone to suicide. Girls did this when I was in school and nothing has changed.
Will it ever?

I read the book Odd girl out and it really make sense when you read the book. I think it may be my favorite book. I recommend reading it. I also hate it when girls do that.

Middle school is when you get it the worst. High school is usually where you make good friends and everyone else is too busy dealing with their own situations to worry about others. I was never really bullied because I never gave a damn what people said, lol. Now the "bullies" are cool and add me on myspace to their friend lists=x

reply

y do they do it easy because they have nothing better to do with there time that's it

Agreed, and I just watched this movie on LIFETIME and the reasons the girls got mad at Vanessa was a pretty stupid reason and I hated that they made Vanessa life a living hell. I think all girls in high school, college, or whatever should watch this movie. I'm 26 and I thought this movie was interesting.
