I expected some decent acting in this film with Hugh Jackman but thought it was a joke! he was terrible along with the kid and supporting cast. The story it self was terrible! This could have been made into an OK movie with a bit more of a gritty story but how this got 7.2 i will never know! Wasted 2 good hours of my life!
Kinda agree with the OP, thought the kid and Jackman did pretty well actually, it was the rest of the cast that was *beep* I thought the movie was pretty bad... but I think its a kids movie... didn't realize that until about 3/4 of the way through...
It was cheesier than Jesus feeding the 5,000 with a fondue set but all the more entertaining for it. People with a lactose intolerance should stay well away, but it wasn't the Transformers rip-off I expected from the trailers: the human characters are certainly better written in Real Steel, and apart from one fleeting reference to human boxing being outsourced to robotic creations better equipped to sate a growing lust for violence, this is so far removed from Matheson's short story that it doesn't even qualify as a spoof.
I don't get the mentality that could find something this innocuous, light and well-made to be "awful." This was a really solid example of a "family film," as opposed to a "kids' film, like "The Smurfs" or any of the "Chipmunks" abominations. My kids (ages 9-15) loved it, and I thought it was fun, which was all it was attempting to be.
Off the top of my head, to qualify as "awful," a movie has to be (1) trying real darn hard to be a Monumental Artistic Achievement and fail miserably, (2) be nothing but a cynical, tossed-off marketing gimmick (see aforementioned Chipmunks commercials . . erm, "movies"), (3) aggressively ugly and/or insulting to its audience by its very nature (see a lot of modern horror or any "Larry the Cable Guy" movie), (4)emotionally dishonest and mindlessly preachy ("Pay it Forward"), or (5) made by George Lucas. Just kidding. A little.
So you didn't dig Wolverine in his Rock 'em, Sock 'em Robots movie. Fine; it's not really a flick for someone in an artsy mood or for a bunch of college bros to take in, but for an enjoyable 2 hours with some kids you could do a lot worse. A LOT worse.

Just a tad strident, there, don't you think Enoch? Funny how we see what we want to see. I saw this as a fun li'l boxing robot movie. You apparently saw . . good lord, I have no idea what you saw. You know you might be prone to overanalysis when you watch big-budget Rock 'em, Sock 'em Robots for two hours and find insidious politcal undercurrents.

Can't understand HOW on earth did this piece of ^&%^&% got such rating on IMDB. Horrible piece of junk worth 3-4 rating max!!!!!!!Don't get how the hell did Jackman agreed to perform in this. Miserable.
I thought this movie was great! It was great for the whole family & Atom was awesome!!! I don't know what all you haters were expecting - it's a family movie, not some action packed thriller. It was funny, cool & had a happy ending. It was the feel good movie of the year - I loved it!!!
"Gritty"? I don't WANT gritty. I'm SICK of gritty. This movie is EXACTLY what I wanted: an actually fun and action-packed story, but with heart, that DOESN'T try to be dark! It was like a throwback to the movies of my childhood, and it was GREAT!
