I came on this forum today after having watched the movie, to have this question answered as well. And yes, to all the angry people in here complaining about how we have to be spoon fed everything, we know THAT he left and we understand WHY he left. What we don't understand is why there was no mentioning of him (by the mom) afterwards. For the type of movie this is (it's NOT a Coen movie) that was a loose end.
