The guy spends his 20's and 30's as a convenience store clerk and then moves on to working a fast food counter. He obviously has no drive, motivation, or money. He's a whiner and kinda funny looking too, yet he seems to constantly score decent looking women. Does anyone else have trouble making sense out of this?
I'll actually tell you the end-all be-all answer to your question: Women LOVE having a guy that needs fixing. It makes them feel important, like they did something. It's just that simple...
As a woman, I don't find him the least attractive. He's passive agressive and wishy-washy, which drives me crazy. He is kind and caring, i'll give him that. But he's just not my type at all. I'd rather sleep with Randall, in spite of his fecklessness and foul mouth. And if I were going for a weird looking or geeky guy, I'd rather jump the virignal Elias, because he's weird in an iteresting way. :P
I agree, but would qualify it to read: some women. Mostly younger women who don't know better. And after the guy is "fixed," they complain, "You've changed!"
Well maybe some women may like fixing some of a mans traits but I have never heard of a womans desire to fix a miserable loser and his beady eyed podgy little face.
He looks like a rat faced bucket of lard.
A combination of a ferret and a scrotum.
An ugly version of David Gest.
A nonce Ricky Gervais.
Simon Weston.
He's more annoying than Ross from Friends.
He's nearly as annoying as Phoebe from Friends.
He is unloveable.
The only sex he'll ever get is if he goes to prison.
This is the most succinct answer to the question. Of course the character is from Mr. Smith's mind and is one way of getting the gorgeous Rosario Dawson to love him. In that way the movie is more sci fi than faction.
It's explained in the movie that he's not so attractive and only gets the "hot fiance" because she's ready to have the nice guy....as far as becky..they were just great friends that fell in love..it happens.

^^This. And I agree, it's true, it does.

Nice post OP. Just posted a similar topic on the Clerks board a few days ago. My wife and I were kinda stumped lol 12 girls? Dante? Really? I'm not so different from him, maybe a little better looking with a lot more money saved up from a way better job (though it was crazy stressful). But I'm no perfect catch; I could use "fixing". Where were my 12 women when I was single? lol Yeah, I'm kind of a Dante/Randall/Elias/Silent Bob combination. Well, maybe not Elias anymore, that was high school/freshman year of college :-)
My wife did think Dante had more going for him in this movie than the first one. When he's on the roof with Becky, she said he gave Becky a look that was "really sweet, like you could tell she was the one he wanted to be with." Communicated all that with just his eyes. And my wife didn't mind him complaining about his problems, she said girls do it, too. We're pretty progressive in our household, double standards are for kids :-) So some women look for different things, they're not all social climbers expecting the man to be a go-getter with CEO aspirations. Or needing him to look like Superman. If the guy's happy in his profession, what's the problem?

You could fall into 12 girls if you go out enough, and probably double that number if you attend university/college...quit putting the pussy on a pedestal lol
