Love the actress, cannot stand the character.

I think Maggie Gyllenhaal is very attractive and talented. Too talented. Enough that I really cannot stand Sherry. What a selfish, sleazy, off-putting person. She is rude to the very nice house manager, shags a man she met 5 minutes prior in a filthy basement, forces HIM to oral her, then she gives oral to the employment counselor to "get the job she wants". Treats her brother's wife like sh**, even though the woman has been raising her child for her and being a better mother than she ever was! If not for her, her daughter would either be in foster care or raised by that disgusting pervert father of hers. And the drinking when she is supposed to be in recovery! I guess in the end (during her plans to steal Dean's car, jump parole and kidnap her daughter) and after assaulting that woman in the bathroom, she had some kind of epiphany and you want to see her overcome her addiction and recover and turn into a likable human being lol

You'd be surprised what drugs and alcohol do to some people. I thought she nailed the role. Sure, Sherry is not all that likable but the film is basically a character study. There are people like this in the world.

The sex part didn't really bother me that much until her father grabbed her tits. That scene was nauseating but women will use their sexuality to get what they want more often than most people even know.

But yeah, I think the ending is her finally realizing that she needs to grow up. To a certain extent, heavy drug use makes people very child-like and causes them to never face reality.

I know all too well about addiction, several family members have overcome alcoholism and/or drug addiction and most times and even to this day, they were/are not the easiest with which to get along. The sex scenes that bothered me most - the one with the employment counselor (if you are "clean" then ACT like it and do not trade sexual favors for what you want) and of course, her father messing with her. Good thing Bobby and Lynn took in her child, Alexis would have likely ended up with that perverted POS and you could see his predatory actions with her at that "homecoming" and how he was all over that little girl. Gross! I agree with your post and thank you for your input!

So, what would you rate the film? I'd give about a 7.3 out of 10.

It does kind of remind me of another movie called Jolene staring Jessica Chastain. Have you seen it? It's probably a little more interesting than Sherrybaby. The drug user films have been beat to death. Jolene is more of an adventure film... well... kind of... lol.
