The best argument against prosthetic 'old school' makeup effects ever!

IMDB boards are full of people screaming that they hate CGI and how the 'old school' prosthetic make up effects were so much better and more realistic; films like this which contain some of the cheesiest rubber make-up effects in existence, just makes the case for CGI effects even more strongly.

I mean, if the Hatchet film makers were deliberately trying to make the effects unconvincing then they did their job, but they clearly were not. The make up in this was just laughable.

With the exception of 'The Thing', prosthetic make up effects were never any good back in the 1980's let alone in the 21st century.

Case Closed.

All of the techniques get better with time. CG and practical both benefit from innovations. In fact, some of the best effects in movies are the ones that you never realize were implemented in the first place, like removals and matte work.

I think CGI can look believeable, but often does not. Just like good prosthetics, and bad. It's money and talent... but not always in that order!

How did you like the movie 'Midnight Meat Train' overall? I haven't seen it yet, but I was wondering if it's a decent horror flick, CG aside.

I really can't think of any movie that uses CGI that looks more convincing than make-up effects......How awful and hokey would the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan would have been if it was ALL CGI-compare that to the latest Rambo-which I loved for the over the top violence-but c'mon-it looked fairly unconvincing-and that goes with The Expendables and Piranha 3D.....Both were really fun movies-not realistic though. The most realistic effect I've seen was in Irreversible during the fire extinguisher scene-that looked so real that if I had seen that in a police video I really would have thought that was real. I agree with the above poster-CGI can look real but often does not-it's just misused. It's significantly cheaper and less time consuming.

Watch any movie with CGI blood splatter, and if you don't agree that CGI is the lazy filmmakers route of choice, then I have no faith in your cinematic prowess. Watch "Survival of the Dead" and come back to me with your complaints about practical FX>

The only film I can think of to have both CGI and Animatronics together with the same quality in each is Jurassic Park. Both are top of their game.

I'd also like to use Predator, Aliens, The Fly, The Thing, Evil Dead 2 and Dawn of the Dead as evidence prosthetics are better than CGI.

And Deep Blue Sea (Samuel.L.Jacksons death!) Episode 1 (Jar Jar Binks) Van Helsing, The Wolfman, 8 Legged Freaks and AVP 2 as evidence for why CGI ruins a film.
