Horse, mule or donkey falling off cliff?
The synopsis says a horse, but as it was happening an animal was braying, so I wasn't sure - anyone know?
(The fall was horribly realistic! I wonder how they did that?)

I recorded and watched it a couple of weeks ago. I may not have erased it, I'll check and see. I believe it was a donkey that started acting up and caused the mishap but I'm not sure which animal fell. It was carrying the body (I think). It was very impressively done -hats off to TLJ for a well thought out little scene. I'd never even heard of this flick and accidentally came across it mid-way through on the Sundance Channel a couple of months ago. I got hooked & forced myself to stop watching it so I could keep an eye out for It at a later date and watch it from the beginning.
shareWatched the scene again a couple more times - It was a horse. Pete & Mike were riding horses followed by a mule, then another horse packing Melquiades' body and taking the fatal plunge.
shareThe horse that took the fatal plunge was the supply horse, not the horse carrying Melquiades' body. After all, Melquiades' body was seen throughout the rest of the movie.
shareHell, yeah, but they KILL an ACTUAL HORSE for that scene??
shareI was wondering myself, when it happened, if it was the beast (donkey or horse) carrying his body. But then we didn't see them go back down the mountain to the base of that cliff (and that I think would have been shown for dramatic effect, i.e. what lengths Pete would go to in his mission), and at any rate the body probably wouldn't have remained intact as it was upon that kind of impact.
So I concluded it had to be a supply pack that animal was carrying.
Understanding is a three-edged sword.
My problem was slightly different. i think there's a continuity error as to the final three living animals.
We begin with three horses and a donkey (maybe a mule).
One horse falls off the cliff.
One horse is payment to the Coyote (which brought up they question as to why they stayed in Mexico).
That should leave one horse and the donkey.
Instead, we have two horses and no donkeys. Pete keeps one and Mike gets the other.
Whither went the donkey?
As someone else said, it was a dummy, or more likely stuffed horse. The donkey was ahead of the spooked horse, and actually kicked at it a few times as it brayed.
It was a horse and a mule at the end of the movie. Pete rides off on the mule and leaves the horse for Mike.
