Money has the value people place on it, and obviously they placed a lot of value on it.

But I agree and what puzzles me more is why would you hand over all the food and medicine you scavenged to the rich , I guess it's to represent real society but it's not taking into account that its the apocalypse and the real economy would be skills and Essential goods.
And two characters attempt to leave one blackmails for millions of dollars the other tries to run with big bags of cash.
That if they did find another group somewhere they might be in for a shock when all they see it as is fancy fire lighters.
