Was the book author supposed to be a mystery?

Having not read the books and not noticing the name of the book Slughorn gave Harry, i was really confused when Snape revealed it was him. Like yeah, ok, you wrote some book, can we get back to you killing Dumbledore?

To me it was just a random potions book that Slughorn gave Harry because he didn't have one already. Ron also got a book then. It felt like just Slughorn had regular school books, with some of them having notes from previous students or teachers.

Why was the book author a secret? Because it had a nasty spell that hurt people in it?

And besides the mystery element, what did the book even do for Harry? I'm talking about movie only.
It's not like in Chamber of Secrets when it was revealed the book was written by Voldemort and it was actually evil. Harry could have known from the start that Snape wrote it and it wouldn't have changed a thing, it was just a book with some useful info in it that helped him a bit. No tricks or anything to it.

I think you are confused. The book was just the standard potions book that everyone used. The book Harry had, though, had belonged to Snape when he was a student. It had his notes in it, including the spell Harry used against Draco.

Snape was NOT the author of the book. He had just written notes in it. As is common in many schools, the books were all returned to the school at the end of the year and Harry just happened to get that book when it was one of the two remaining books.

Oh thanks for clearing that up for me. I indeed got confused by that.
