what was the stuff that her father made her kneal on?

section close to the start and her father makes her kneal on something, and it looks like she was in pain...
anyone know what that stuff was??

I know in some place in England in the 1800s and so on children were made to kneel on salts, sand or grain for an unspecified amount of time as a punishment. I'm not sure how widely used it was, but I've certainly heard of it.
