You should watch Noah if you haven't yet.Darren Aronofsky's latest film and it looks like The Fountain's cousin. They share some themes. The Fountain has The Tree Of Life on its central and Noah in the other hand The Three of Knowledge. It's another masterpiece from Darren's uncomparable talent...!

You sir need glasses!Noah was a piece of *beep* nowhere near The Fountain.

Mr. Nobody (2009)

Yeah, I've seen that. 'Tis a good'un.

How about Cloud Atlas?

reply

Thanks for the suggestion, but I thought it was pretentious mush.

The thing I liked most about The Fountain was the philosophical value. I saw none of that in Cloud Atlas.

Upstream Colour
M (Korean film by Myung-se Lee)

reply

YEAH!!!

Upstream Colour is mesmerizing visually, aurally, and intellectually.
Also, it may be as polarizing as The Fountain. You may either love it or hate it.

Others have mentioned The Tree of Life, but that movie did not evoke the same reaction in me as The Fountain.

I believe that a close second to Upstream Colour is The Red Violin and, in my opinion, Mr Nobody would be third.

If you enjoyed the "future" segments of The Fountain and the wonder of what might come next, take a look at "Voyagers" (it is only 15 minutes long). There is no explicit plot, other than what you make of it, but the visuals and sound are fantastic.

This may sound weird and just popped in my head, but a robot action movie by Antonio Banderas called "Automata" is actually quite deep philosophically regarding what does it mean to be alive and our future place in the universe. The mood of the movie is also similar to The Fountain. However, I would not put it anywhere near the same league cinematographically as the ones I mentioned above. I am only mentioning it if you are looking for something with more of a linear and conventional plot and that you can watch while eating popcorn.

If you are looking for the full philosophical conundrum of humanity slapping you in the face for 3 hours, there is no substitute IMHO to "Hard to be a God". I had to watch it in several sittings and it felt like homework after I was done, but it did leave a lasting impression on me similar to The Fountain. However, I do not recommend that movie to most people.

+1 for Upstream Color

try Muholland Drive. it's not too philosophical, yet you might find yourself stunned for its plot, metaphor and symbolism. try not to mention it has powerful story too.

Three Times (2005.) Chinese movie that charts a pair of "lovers" in different incarnations across different generations.
