I am from Invercargill, when I first heard that Roger Donaldson wanted to make this movie I was like "uh, sounds cool, but I don't see many people forking out to watch it". I was wrong. I guess I am surprised that so many people enjoyed such a simple story (which was so quintessentially New Zealand for the first half) on a modest budget in an age of uber-expensive "masterpieces" like Transformers, Terminator Salvation and 2012 (hahahahaha, I knoiw its lame to laugh at your own jokes but come on, 2012!)

Maybe us crazy American's love a good nostalgic speed movie, about iconic racer's. The scenery around Bonniville is so cool.

I just saw it for the first time and thought it was pretty great (I'm American). I prefer nicely paced human stories like this (another one that I watched recently and really liked is "Sling Blade")... I'm getting so sick of trash like what you mentioned, all those flashy no substance movies. Stuff like that was "tolerable" once in awhile but it's become so prevalent in the last decade, really disgusting.

Hehe, the way you compare it with those "big deal" movies, you make WFI (the movie) an analogy to the story it tells: Against all odds, a nobody from nowhere, smashes the world speed record for his class of motorcycle".

It's a David and Goliath story. Although it wasn't emphasized in the movie, serious speed record contenders were highly financed. Along comes Burt...

And best of all, it's TRUE! CGI and special effects can produce any kind of illusion, and they no longer impress me. But my God, a 1920-something motorcycle setting a speed record that still stands??? That's quite a story.

Burt is the kind of guy Americans love to make heroes out of. An underdog who wins by sheer determination. The US may be a powerful country, but we come from humble beginnings, and we love to see the underdog win.

I am not a Pommie or a Kiwi, I'm an American and I loved this movie! I have movie nights with my dear mother some Thursdays while my dad is out with his buddies. I showed this to her last night. She loved it! It was my second time seeing it, my best friend had shown it to me knowing I'd love it.
The delightful character of Burt, is overcoming obstacles, his charm, the people he meets, his spirit, his ideas, his racing, and the bike were all so awesome!

I loved the shots of him RACING with his goggles on while at the beach while racing the gang.

In a great scene of respect I **UBER LOVED** how the motorcycle gang showed up, gave "beer money", and provided and escort to the harbour. That was cool!

What's not to love about a good story? As other posters have mentioned, based on a true story! :)

We don't like it. The vote is high because I would guess undoubtedly everyone in your backward country is brimming with pride about the movie and gives it a 10/10. Personally, I thought that Days of Thunder was better.

Maybe if you in your backward country ever get to set foot in NZ you might realise that this film actually got panned in NZ?

But nah you're not capable of thinking outside of your own contrived view.

Im a Yank(a black1 but 1 nonetheless) and i watched(rented) and enjoyed this film tremendously & thats saying alot because i have an aversion to things NZ in a big way!!! & this movie made me forget all about it while watching!!

Sadly there where a few scenes that still made me want to stop watching!!

didnot like when the motor(sickle:0)cycle gangleader & hisbirdperched(brunette)
on back roaredup to give him the money to use for his trip!!! Im probably NEVER going to be able to watch SONS OF ANARCHY because i will start retching seeing all the brunette/blonde/reds sitting on their thrones onthe backs of those hogs!!! this spring/summer i had some very dark thoughts about what i wanted todo to them when i would see them on the highways VERY DARK THOUGHTS!
it was ROAD RAGE POSSIBILITIES CENTRAL IN MY HEAD!!!!! wanted to create a few GHOST RIDERS of my own & SEND EM TO STURGIS HELL!!!!!!

didnot like when he picked the soldier up and dogtags tells him that he had got vacatleave from THE VIETNAM WAR just to come and see his bird & she had moved from oldLA to UTAH!!!! Guess she was WORTH THE EFFORT OF A MILITARY FLIGHT!!

Ha, Ha! Stereotypes are so funny, aren't they?

You need to get out more, mate - Not only did America invent the film industry, but thousands of films are produced here every year with every genre of story imaginable. Not sure in the point of trying to say that America only produces action blockbusters.

Actually, the first ever feature length movie was made in Australia.
"The story of the Kelly gang" (1906).

Maybe one of the reasons we like it so much is because Indian was created and built in America. In Springfield Massachusetts in 1901 to be precise. My dad worked for Indian up until it closed and was reformed as Titeflex.
