What's with the tattoo?

In the Phuket flashback Jack gets his tattoo and later gets beaten by gang members for having it. That didn't make any sense to me. Also the tattoo was in Mandarin rather than Thai which is odd considering that the tattoo girl was supposed to mark him

This was definitely a filler episode for sure. Didn't make sense cause they were making stuff up new stuff on the spot and it didn't tie in with the plot

Because they weren´t making it up as they went along the entire way. There was some politics behind the scenes which made it appear that way.
