The Hispanics in the film ...

... all die, as well as the black captain. Does anybody else find this tendency to kill off the ethnic minority characters disturbing? It'd be a coincidence if it happened in one film (or TV programme - much as I love later Star Trek and Babylon 5, half their expendable redshirt pilots seemed to be Latino). However, it happens so often by now that you'd think scriptwriters would be more aware.

reply

You do know that the script is written before the people are cast right? And the people audition for the parts they are interested in.

reply

You should realize that some characters' ethnicities are writen into the script, though. Like Elena and Valentin (which, I might add, sounds so much better when pronounced the right way!).
Just something I wanted to add...

Can two men reproduce?
No, but God knows we keep trying.

They didn't just kill the minorities, they lured one with money to face (at the time) totally unnecessary danger and then KICK him, in the head as he begged for his life, down an elevator shaft. The female Hispanic character is a danger to the groups survival with her phobias and the African American captain ends up being the cause of death for the survivors left behind. This film was so biased in it's ethnic stereotypes it surpassed angering me and just made me laugh. Really hard.

There were no pure-evil Englishman though (see my previous post about why that's strange) Not having an evil British person (often the cause of the vital, yet unbelievably ludicrous disaster scenario) in a bad Hollywood disaster film is a low that makes it even less memorable.

Regarding the African Americans and the Hispanics...the stereotypes are so obvious that you would actually have to be blind and deaf not to notice the blatant racism which is entrenched into an already terrible script. In my opinion the portrayal of the women in the film was predominantly also unnecessarily demeaning and misogynistic - most of the time they just cried and got in the way (as with the kid...) I feel that, as a demographic (white, straight and male) which was not prejudiced against by the script of this movie, I myself am in a very small minority!

reply

I agree... I am shocked that the gay guy survived... but I am mad that he killed off some of that ethnicity.

reply

You have got to be kidding.

lol, some people just have to find racism in absolutely anything.

The gay guy survived.....that eliminates your 'minority' theory don't it.

And to be frank, how many times have black guys saved whites in real life?

You are kidding, right? O_O

My question is when american people and american movies will understand the difference between culture and race? Youre all treating the Hispanic concept as a unique race, not white. That is as stupid as saying italians or spaniards are not white. Hispanic is ONLY a cultural designation to people who have or had something in common with the Spanish culture (from Spain, Europe) and is never a racial term. A black person born in cuba can be said to be related to Hispanic Culture as Cuba was owned by Spain. A mexican, colombian, argentinian etc are also related to the Hispanic culture because their countries belonged to Spain. And of course Spaniards have THE Hispanic culture representation. Given that a Hispanic as you say can be black, white, brown, have asiatic apperance (for example Phillipines also belonged to Spain) . So we are not talking about an ethnicity and their treatment in movies ok? Because i repeat hispanic is not an ethnicity nor a race.

I'm watching it now and noticing that.

FORTY YEARS since the first movie and look at how far it has come; three skinny white women (after the original movie had the fat woman dying saving everyone) and two blue-eyed blonde guys.

They couldn't put two blacks and three latinos as some of the ten survivors who make it out of the ballroom (imagine a black person or Hispanic surviving and the white person doesn't!!), yet now we must contend with an upcoming Fantastic Four movie putting a white sister with a black brother and if you question it, YOU'RE A RACIST!!!!

This is Hollywood.

The race-baiters on the board...

My people skills are fine. It's my tolerance of morons that needs work.

Grow up, try being Native American, nobody even listens to us. Whites aren't in Spanish movies either, blacks are blacks being the hero. Native American films HAVE TO HAVE whites, at least Hispanic films can ALL BE Hispanics. Grow up and get a life, you truly can't be this clueless.
