Jesus, it was nails on a chalkboard. The first half hour or so I was only mildly grated by it. After that all the way to end, everything she said just cut through me like a dentist drill.
Good film, though, it must be said.

The mother? She was only in a few scenes. I found her irritating, but she was meant to be. She's a childlike, immature woman who has no business being responsible for kids.

You must be talking about the mother, right ? Yeah, I also think it's annoying, but hey, it's pretty normal in Japan, many girls think it's cute, girly and tend to act,speak, walk cute-ly, and the mother is some kind of that.
And if you wonder why the mother's old, I mean she's had childs, but still doing childish things like that, it's because, I think, she's a Japan hostess (google for more information) and her customers like her doing that.
