Billy’s and Colin’s respective reactions to Madelyn’s childhood photo
What I liked about it was that it shows that Billy is interested in her child self - a view of who she is - where she comes from and Colin wasn't. He takes it out of the box and hangs it up. Whereas Colin says: “You don't see any pictures of where I came from. Look, I respect who you are. Just, you know, not in the living room. We might have company.”
That is a very shallow and conceited response to her putting up something as innocent as a childhood photo of what may have been a very happy memory. It shows Colin isn’t confident enough to put up his own childhood memories for her to see…because he was tainted from childhood by associating with Costello.
It also shows Colin’s view on relationships…it’s all for show. He needs to look the part…the expensive apartment, the successful psychiatrist girlfriend etc. It was all created to cater to his goal…which we see at the beginning of the movie when he’s staring at the State House. Climbing the social ladder…Madolyn was just another rung for him. The fact that he couldn’t perform in the bedroom only adds to Colin’s fake persona vis a vis Madolyn.
Billy on the other hand saw her as a person to share intimacy with, his relationship with Madolyn wasn’t shallow…but wholesome. And that’s why he was successful where Colin could never be with Madolyn…having a son with her. Even in death Billy defeats Colin…because his feelings for her were genuine. Whereas Colins’ weren’t.
Their respective reactions to Madolyn’s childhood photo proved that. Love is in the little everyday things.
