Why could the mother not drive...I came in a little late to the movie

My mom lived in Brooklyn in the 50's where everything she needed was within walking distance or close to public transportation. However, when the family moved to suburbia, she had to learn to drive as nothing was close to the house. Since the Ryan's lived in the burbs it is surprising that she didn't drive, especially with 10 kids.(emergencies, Dr.visits, school meetings, etc)

I figured it was the time she was living and felt sorry for her because she never learned how to drive. Maybe she was afraid of change or worried she might like the freedom enough to leave her husband.
