Other Films Like Little Children?

Can I get some recommendations as to which films I should watch that are similar to Little Children?

I really loved this film.

reply

I would definitely recommend American Beauty. It's got a very similar feel, deals with suburbia, and has a great score. Thomas Newman did both the scores for Little Children and American Beauty.

reply

Thanks I had already watched American Beauty one of my favorites. Just watched Happiness and the woman Ronny went on a date with was in it i liked it too.

Thanks to all who recommended some movies to watch I'll catch up on them all.

And what about the movies from LC director Todd Field?

Hard Candy is a dark film that leaves you questioning everything right until the end.

I would recommend the film Happiness that starred Philip Seymour Hoffman among others. It deals with a lot of the same themes.. hopeless life in suburbia, yearing for love, and even child molestation. Its quite different, less idealistic, and more disturbing. But if you liked Little Children I think you will appreciate it! It was another memorable movie for me!

Notes on a scandal
Children's Hour
Mysterious Skin
Night of the Hunter
Ice Storm

Wow,very good list with the exception, "Night of the Hunter". It is an excellent film but bears absolutely NO resemblance to, "Little Children" or any of the other films on your list. It reminds me of that Sesame Street game, "Which one of these things is not like the other...."

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it." Norman Maclean

And The Ice Storm.. ugh, no one should ever recommend that movie.

Besides the obvious American Beauty and Hapiness, I'd also suggest Amélie -though being a French film might have a bad effect on your viewing depending on whether or not you like dubbed or subtitled films. There's an Italian movie as well whose English name I don't remember but in Spanish is called A donde El Corazon te Lleve. Finally, an Argetinian-Spanish production called Martin Hache is a must-see if you liked Little Children

reply

How is Amelie anywhere similar to this film??? Amelie is a charming romantic comedy that leaves you feeling alive and a little bittersweet, this one leaves you with jaw dropped saying what did I just watch? Lol

reply

Sorry, I don't think "Amélie" can be remotely compared to "Little Children". "Amélie" was supposed to be a comedy. Personally, I didn't like "Amélie" one bit, I disliked the main character (Audrey Tautou) and her irritating smile. I think it was an utter waste of time and an overrated movie.

But it definitely has nothing to do with "Little Children" and all the other movies mentioned here.

With Pat Wilson and the pedophile theme:
From around the same time, HARD CANDY

Revolutionary Road - One of the best relationship stories I've seen in ages. But it’s much darker :)
Or maybe Last Night which I personally didn’t like so much.

reply

Revolutionary Road is similar. I liked it very very much!

Me too.

Revolutionary Road is certainly a match in "East Coast suburban locale," though it takes place decades earlier; Little Children is a contemporary story.

And we also have Kate Winslet starring in both films.

I think that one odd similarity is how in "Little Children," there is the character of Ronnie the registered sex offender and in Revolutionary Road there is Michael Shannon as the mental patient. In both films, this outside character clashes with the romantic melodrama of the main story, and rather ruins "the fake perfection" of the protagonists lives. And in both films, this "outsider" has a mother who dearly loves the adult child even as she his humiliated by him.

In addition to the mostly excellent films listed here, I'd recommend:

"The Upside of Anger"

"Ordinary People"

The films of Ingmar Bergman, particularly "Cries and Whispers"

The films of Woody Allen, particularly "Match Point"

The films of Robert Altman, particularly "Short Cuts"

The films of Atom Egoyan, particularly "Exotica"

The films of Paul Thomas Anderson, particularly "Magnolia" and "Punch-Drunk Love"

The films of Noah Baumbach, particularly "Margot at the Wedding"

The films of Alejandro González Iñárritu ("21 Grams," "Babel" and "Amores Perros" are all roughly excellent to me)

We Don't Live Here Anymore is similar and is about relationships and cheating.

Happiness

I'd say The Sweet Hereafter and The Woodsman are similar. The Sweet Hereafter in particular is one of the best films I've ever seen.
