My audience might as well have been dead fish.

Seriously, my friend and I were the ONLY ones who laughed at ANY part of the movie, except the sex scene with the squeaky bed. It was completely ridiculous. I was laughing out loud every five minutes or so.

The best part was the people that left early. First, this wigger/frat kid with a giant baseball cap and bling. Then, this creepy dude with long hair and a porn mustache we had noticed earlier. Finally, this guy who looked like he just finished watching The Pick-Up Artist, with a toboggan on his head, goggles, a black Ed Hardy-esque shirt, and chains hanging everywhere. It was so perfect and hilarious.

The rest of the audience was either making out or staring boredly at the screen.

I'm wondering if any of the rest of you had a similar experience? It kind of pissed me off because I thought it was such a brilliant movie, but I'm guessing a lot of the people there didn't get the movie. I mean it was showing at 9:30 on a Monday night so...maybe not the cream of the crop that showed up [my friend and I just graduated college, so we have an excuse ;)]?

I went to a 2:30 PM show with 4 other people. I was THE ONLY one laughing. I started muting my laugh a bit because I felt awkward. The movie was hilarious.

My theater only had like 6 people in it for this movie. And they kinda laughed a few times just like me. The movie was a pretty good 7. Def not Superbad good.

Why did it matter to you so much what others thought of the film? Isn't it sufficient for you to enjoy it yourself? Not everyone has the same tastes - no film is objectively "great".

You seem to think this is some highly intelligent comedy that only "the few" will "get".

There were a couple of frat boy types in my theater who walked out, too! And the funny thing is they came in late. I was thinking to myself "Ah, they probably think it's like Superbad -- I bet it's too intelligent for them." They walked out within ten minutes.

The audience seemed to laugh at quite a few scenes when I saw the film. However when it was over I heard a bunch of young teens talking about how much the movie sucked *shrugs*

I imagine like someone stated earlier these kids probably thought it'd be cross between Superbad and The Hangover. I found the movie hilarious but it's a completely different kind of humor than the aforementioned films.

"You can't spell slaughter without laughter!"

When I went to see it, it was 10 on a thursday night, and the theater was empty except me and my friend! It was all good though because we were able to talk as much as we wanted and laugh extremely loudly and point out all the times we thought he was cute(both of us are in love with Michael Cera)

We both loved the movie and we wanted to see it again a week later but the theater we went to was having problems with the projector

Next time I see you, I chop you head!

I went during the day today (Wed) and it was pretty quiet, but the 4 or 5 other people in the room didn't laugh ONCE...I almost found myself feeling embarrassed because when I laughed it seemed so loud!! And the bit with the cartoon sex book characters floating around, and he was trying to put his finger...well that just grossed me out, but my audience did not make a peep... so weird!

reply

The movie probably sucks (I didn't see it).

This movie was a *beep* bore.
I stopped watching this *beep* 40 minutes in. I kept wanting to give it a chance. I was saying to myself "Dave, that review you saw on imdb about them college kids laughing when everyone else wasn't, must have been posted for a reason. Just keep it together man." And I was *beep* right! That *beep* was posted because them college kids were some retarded ass *beep* Talking bout needing a *beep* college degree to understand this *beep* *beep* you *beep* If you laughed and 70 other people didn't, it doesn't mean that your *beep* college *beep* made you more intelligent and capable of understanding *beep* the rest of those "dumb" *beep* in that theater didn't. It just means that you're a pretentious *beep* with a *beep* taste in humor. *beep* wasn't funny. Next you'll be telling me that "Friends" or "Joey" are humor masterpieces that require some *beep* degree to understand, and that "Seinfeld" was made for some redneck ass, sister *beep* inbred *beep*

*beep* you college kids that laughed at this movie. You all stupid. That's the only reason you laughed.

I'd say it would take some sort of degree to wade through the self defeating yet somehow narcissistic fixation you have with intellectuals (which I think is what you mean by "college" people). Personally I didn't think it was a very good movie. I don't understand who it's really for. Who is the target audience? Despite your brilliant thoughts on the *beep*ing subject, it's not really a "college" movie. It seems aimed more at high school loner intellectuals, yet it cobbled together by someone much older and seems like it. There is no innocence to go with the fixation and longings. I was tempted to read the books a while back, but now they've moved down my list of things to get around to. Today's kids have to walk the line of being much more aware at a much younger age than kids have been in the past. But I don't think that means they just become socially retarded and jaded adults, which is what I thought this movie expressed.

Some of the specific lines were pretty funny, but I just couldn't wrap my head around the movie as a whole. Not what I expected it to be, but I admittedly didn't know much going in.
