Well, I hadn't lost faith in critics (or humanity!) with this film, but for whatever reason, I thought they were dead wrong about it. I had read the book, and because of the not-so-great reviews, I was ready to be disappointed. But I guess the reason why I liked the film so much is because I thought it was very faithful to the book. Of course, it doesn't have the time to show all the detail found in the book, but what it showed I thought was very faithful.
Off the top of my head, the negative critical reaction of this movie reminds me of when I saw Clint Eastwood's "Changeling" a few years ago with Angelina Jolie. American critics didn't think highly of it, but I thought it was one of the best films of the year. Changeling also received lots of BAFTA nominations, even though it didn't win anything. So while I do rely on critical reviews to help guide me on what's out there, many times they're not right.
