No this isn't another thread about how they cast Chinese actresses to play Japanese characters. Lol
I was just wondering, can Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc tell which country a person is from by their appearance or mannerisms? My parents are Dominican and they can pretty accurately tell if someone is from Puerto Rico or Ecuador, or any other Spanish speaking country just by how they talk or look. Does this work for Asians too?
It's pretty simple for me, a white bread american, to tell them apart, especially Japanese and Chinese. The only ones I get mixed up are Chinese and Taiwanese, who are ethnically the same, but boy was it a mistake to mix them up.
I'd say it's not as easy as people claim it is..........not when you're going strictly by appearance without having language or cultural references to use.
I had a Vietnamese friend once (immigrated from Vietnam) who claimed that she could tell what ethnicity/country an Asian was from just by looking at them. So I tested her on that.
At a medium distance, I pointed to some Asians and asked her to identify them. This was in the US, so they were dressed as Americans. She positively stated a country. Then when we got closer we could hear the language they were using and it wasn't the language of the country she said.
this is pure *beep* people u cannot tell them apart by looks alone, just like u cant tell the difference between Or Tutsi vs ZULU . Chinese and Japanese are the exact same race. Mongoloid. yOu put them in a room u cant tell. Only way you would know is if they were speaking their native tongue.
Back up there buddy. No harm if you can't, but don't speak for me, or those who can. Just because you can't do something doesn't mean others or i can't.
Never interrupt silence unless you're going to improve it
It's easy for most people to tell, in my opinion. Korean/Chinese/Japanese people look pretty different, while Cambodian/Vietnamese/Mongolian (once again, in my opinion) look very similar. Even then, accent/tone/mannerisms help differentiate.
Actually, there's genetic evidence that Mongolians and Koreans are the most similar. Chinese and Japanese to a lesser extent. The Japanese definitely seem to be a blend of many Asian cultures together-although Mongolian, Chinese, and Korean are the most dominant influences. Vietnamese is most related to Chinese culturally. However there has been ALOT of intermixing between these groups throughout the centuries. As a result, you get people from these countries who look VERY similar to each other-if not identical.
But it's true that if you see them not speaking their ethnic languages and wearing modern-day clothing, it's very easy to mix them up. I'm Korean American. In Korea, most people guessed that I was Japanese. In Japan, most people thought I was Chinese. Both wrong! Those people who claim that they can name a person's ethnicity accurately by appearance alone are full of it.
As I was looking at the discussion threads for this movie I was surprised to see such an ignorant question. You say your parents can tell the difference between Latinos. In the broadest stretch of the imagination how can you consider Asian people to be any different? Either this is a troll question posted to illicit a response such as mine or is indicative to ignorance caused by lazy thinking. FYI: Blacks/Africans that are immersed in such cultures can mostly tell each other apart. The same goes for Northern Europeans and ANY other cultural group.
To those people who say they can tell the difference, look at Youki Kudoh-the actress who plays Pumpkin. Youki really is Japanese in real life. Exactly HOW is her look, gestures, etc. different from the Chinese actresses playing the other main geisha? I'd like to hear it. And no, accent doesn't count. This is about how to tell East Asians apart by look alone.
1. I hate when Westerners discuss the difference between Korean, Japanese, and "Chinese" looks because there is no Chinese look. China is a huge, huge country and many of its provinces have populations larger than many countries. Chinese from the Northeast are stereotypically tall and strapping, while Chinese from the Southeast are stereotypically shorter in stature and darker-skinned.Take a train going from Guangzhou to Harbin and it can be quite easier to guess who comes from the Northeast and who comes from the Southeast - Those differences are bigger than the differences between Koreans and Japanese, who are much closer genetically.
2. While there is definitely a certain archetypical "look" to each ethnic group that makes it stand out, there is also an overlap of phenotypes. There are Vietnamese who can pass as natives in Guangdong, and others who can't. Same with Cantonese people in Vietnam. There are Kazakhs from Kazakhstan who have a distinctively "Kazakh" look (small, bright-colored eyes, round cheeks, wide shoulders, rosy complexion, brown hair), and others who can pass as Chinese or Koreans (small, brown eyes, black hair, golden complexion, smaller build and frame).
