You see people hyping things like The Witch, Hereditary, The Babadook, It Follows, The Conjuring, Insidious, etc but this movie is actually better than those yet it is so under appreciated and underrated.
This movie is a gem that should be rediscovered and granted the cult status it rightly deserves.
There is a lot to love in this movie.
I think It Follows is a better movie. But Skeleton Key is certainly a good horror film. Easily better than most modern horror. I love a good horror but find 9 out of 10 of them to be worthless. Popularity is no accurate gauge in this genre.

This film has good production values, good acting, a lot of mystery and intrigue plus a stellar twist.
Not much to gripe about.
I feel bad that in my head this was a decent film from yesteryear that perhaps doesn't hold up, a rewatch has done it wonders in my estimation.
Part of the problem is this was released when horror films were dismissed. Nowadays with this whole 'elevated horror' bullshit, it's now hip and intellectual to praise 'intelligent' Horror films. So much so many film discussion community members online make 'elevated horror' part of their whole aesthetic and personality. "oooh a new A24 horror film, I love A24, peep my black phillip tattoo".
Did you know The Skeleton Key has a measly 38% on Rotten Tomatoes? Ridiculous.
